Why was Sing hired in the first place?

The Yorks wanted to continue the legacy that Mike Nolan left behind when he got canned... Mike Singletary was his protege thus it's no shocker that the team is where it is right now!

Pretty much how Al Davis being from Oakland couldn't resist a man who is a wanna be thug.

Because Jed was in love with Singletary's BS. He should have waited until the offseason, and weighed his options.
I got sick to my stomach when they hired him, then two days later (or whatever) Washington grabbed Shannahan.
That still pisses me off.

LOL...you're pissed off for no reason. Shanahan was hired this year.

Same here
I wonder if you both still feel that way.

The bigger problem here is the Yorks. Why do they seem to make their desparate moves at a bad time? Fire Nolan in mid-season. Let McLoughan go just before the draft. Change OC in midseason. This is not the mark of an intelligent organization that knows what is going on. If it did, it would proactively make its moves at the end of a season. Instead, they ignore the warning signs, then pull the trigger when their bone-headed mistake disgracefully hits them over the head.

He represented great value to the YORKIES. Instead of paying $5 - $6 MILLION they got a bargain basement value HC. That's what they always seek. Good value rather than a great coach with experience. Plus they didn't have to go through the TEDIUS interview process of looking at 3, 5, 7 candidates and narrowing it down which is stressful and time consuming. The YORKIES have been mailing it in for years. They don't try. That should be obvious by now.
1) Great Value (CHEAP).
2) Don't have to go through the tedius interview process (too much work).
Plus we have JED "Silver Spoon" YORKIE who is a 27 year old Billionaires kid who ZERO experience at anything in life. He is completely overmatched and overwhelmed. Singletary probably gave him one good speech or said some motivational words about Vernon Davis and Spoon gave him the job.
Our organization is a joke. Probably only the Raiders and Lions are worse.
Saying a 27 year old guy has zero experience makes no sense. How is that possible?
Being super rich helps...but if the CHEAPO Dorks would hire a GM with winning NFL experience, Dinglefairy might be okay, if he's kept on a short leash.

I've been asking this same question for a while now and the 2 best answers I got were
1) The players like(d) Singletary a lot. Jed heard it saw it felt it and thought hey this guy can motivate an atheist to turn Christian so he can motivate these players to run through wall for him.
2) Yorks are cheap as SandDiego9er has pointed out several times.

LOL I guess in my mind Shanahan was available at the time. Holmgren wanted a year off, but did Shanahan want one too? I'm thinking if the Niners offered him the job he would have taken it. But, wtf do I know.

Because the 49er front office is a joke and the owners are dumb. This is the only franchise in the league that would have made him a head coach after squeaking out some games against cellar dwellers at end of '08 season.

Shanahan hasn't done anything in the league since 1998 - after both Niners and Dallas weren't able to put up great teams due to the beginning of Salary Cap Era. Shanahan is over-rated. Even his players in Denver said - Shanahan got obsessed with numbers - he wanted to be no.1 in all offensive categories and used to bash players even after wins.
Redskins just lost to the lowly Rams (in fact they got hammered). I don't get the love for Shanahan or Holmgren (who took several seasons with Seahawks to get them to playoffs) or Gruden (who won with Tony Dungy team and never won anything again).
