He was better at center than a lot of folks expected. He had some good games and some poor ones. Early in the season he was clearly confused by some of the better defenses but improved as the season went on.
He is worth keeping although I expect Baalke to target a center in the 4th round or so.

b/c he only played 3/4 of a season at center. The other 3 years he played guard.
So? Maurkice Pouncey was a guard his first year and a half and moved to center his last year and a half at Florida. Now he's a pro bowl center, not guard.

Just b/c Pouncey did it doesn't me everybody else can. Plus Pouncey played a year and 1/2 at center. Baas played 1/2 a season at center and 3 years at guard. so he and his agent probably thought his value would be much higher at guard then at center. maybe he felt more comfortable beign a guard than a center. Then you have to look at how the niners used him. It's on them to evaluate and figure out if he was a guard or center. I remember they drafted him as a guard prospect. The Steelers did things differently. Different players have different situations.

See I think that's a weak argument. Baas did only play his last year at center but he was an all american center and winner of the Dave Rimington Trophy for best center in the nation. So obviously he was a good center. Clearly based on what we saw this year he's better and more comfortable and center.

what's weak? I didn't ever say he was bad at center coming out of college. As a Michigan fan I can tell you he was a great center for a year, but an even better guard for 3 years. So I'm sure that is in part what led to him and his agent making a decision to being a guard. Or maybe it was at the combine where scouts and coaches told him they like his tape as a guard better. When he was drafted guard was the bigger need than center, so that's where they plugged him in. I have no clue why none of the coaching staff over the last 4/5 season never put him at center until Heitmann's injury. No doubt he played his best ball at center this year. I'm not saying he was bad at center or guard dude was a best in college at both positions. That's why I say different situations for different players. B/c if another team drafted him they might have made him a center day one.

I was getting at the Steelers not moving Pouncey. He was a G/C prospect and they certainly needed both. They kept him at center instead of moving him away from what appeared to be his natural position.

I was very happy when Baas was moved to C. He did other than the botched snap that resulted in a saftey vs NO played very well. C is his best position I'm a big UM fan and he was great at C for us.
He wants to comeback the 49ers want him and one of the Matt's posted recently that they have talked about a new contract already. I think we sign him before March 4th

Tho his natural position even at Michigan was at RG, Baas to me is just a better Center.. He played center when he was a senior but was a guard thruout his career..
And i do think that he is our best Center right now, so i'd keep him.

I think we are forgetting that heitman is the man at center he leads the offense more than any of our qb's have over 5 yrs. What do you guys think about heitman still starting?

Dudes saying he wants to come back. That's one less position we have to worry about.

We should lock him up. He's proven he can do it. Now we just need a right guard and we will be set for the next 5 to 6 years. Time to let these guys gel.

Center is the most mentally difficult position on the line but is also the easiest from a physical standpoint. Very rarely do centers take on a NT 1 on 1 without at least a chip block to help. O-lineman are typically some of the smarter players on the offense, so the value placed on the mental aspect of the position is diminished. Baas was an amazing center and guard, but guard has more value on an offensive line, and the coaches thought he had the physical talents to succeed at G. 3 years later he never panned out so they moved him back to the easiest position(physically) along the line and he excelled.
Same holds true for Pouncey, if the Steelers find a rookie or other player who can be a decent Center but not at guard and the need for a Guard arises... guess who is making the move since Pouncey can play both (or at least showed he could in college). And if he doesn't pan out at guard they would move him back to Center and look to FA or the draft, just like we did with Baas.
