It Seems to me that Alex Smith needs Rhythm to be successful. When he's in the spread, consistently passing the ball, he's best.
When Raye calls a HB dive, followed by a FB dive, followed by a 3rd-and-7 or 8 pass play, its pretty hard for him to get in rhythm.
Am I wrong?

The reason the offense fails so much on third downs is because the prior two downs are wasted on terrible plays.

Yes to both above. Alex Smith seems to thrive in a faster pace spread offense. I wonder why we're not playing to his strength more?
