As of this weeks we are:
#5 in Rush Defense
#9 in Scoring Defense
#25 in Pass Defense
#19 in Total Defense
Some good things about the run and scoring. Major issues in the pass defense. Looks like we need speed in the back field to cover fast receivers and more pass rush.

According to Football Outsiders:
#7 in Rush Defense
#8 in Pass Defense
#6 in Total Defense
I can't explain it, but they use more advanced stats than just pure yardage.

The last column is a total ranking. It has us as 27th overall. Is that a team ranking, defensive ranking or something else?

I couldn't tell if it was divided into weekly ranking or total ranking. So sophisticated that a person like me can not grasp it totally. In any case it does appear that we are a highly ranked defense when it comes to run and scoring defense. When we factor in passing we are near the bottom of the pack. Total numbers push us near the middle to the bottom of the pack. So we have a couple of things going well for us and we need to shore up the rest.
It looks to me like getting Franklin resigned would be most helpful. J. Smith and Sop, along with Franklin fulfill the issues of a 3-4 Dline well. That part is settled. Now whether Balmer, McDonald and RJF are fulfilling their part of the role is another question. IF Balmer is not going to make it then this area becomes a draft issue but at least our front line is intact and productive.
LBs do well for run attack. It does appear to me that Haralson, Spikes are liabilities for screens and TE coverage. So we could use an update there. Brooks seems to be coming on as a pass rusher but coverage awareness remains to be seen. Lawson seems to have improved in his awareness of setting the edge. His pass rushing skills seem to be limited. So LB could use an upgrade with speed, coverage, and pass rush. I would like to see draft picks here. I don't think McKillop will be that answer for pass rush and i wonder if he will be the answer as a Ted? I would like Graham or Hughes to push everyone along in their development.
Safety looks like we need to replace Lewis. Good run support but no pass defense. Goldson is at least developing to the point of seeing his potential and that he can be a game changer when focused. But still has some issues regarding pass defense. So I think it would be good to let Lewis go and see if we can get a FA safety or draft one. So this seems to be a offseason focus area.
CB is another interesting place of need. Spencer has been great this year. Clements has clearly displayed our need for him at run support. Brown and Bly have been up and down. I think Bly needs to go for he is too me first and does not think of the team needs. Brown still may turn out to be something good. From my point of view I would like to see Clements moved to FS and Goldson to SS and then get two CBs in FA/draft. We still also need to see what Reggie Smith has to offer us as well and the kid from LSU that went on IR. But we could use some FA/Draft help in our backfield and get some speed.
So we need OLB, possibly ILB, Safety, and CBs in the offseason.

11th in sacks (36)
1st in forced fumbles and 1st in recoveries (23 ff, 15 recovered)
8th total tackles (1044)
13th (tie) Passes defensed (84)
7th rush defense (1465 yards and 3.7 yards per carry)
6th in scoring defense (18.3 per game)
3rd (tie) touchdowns (28)
26th passing (3648 yds 7.0 per pass)

This will all change if Ahmad Brooks pans out next year. I would like to see how our passing defense did with him in as the edge rusher.

We got almost half(44%) our sacks in three games. We need players that can beat the best tackles one on one, not just the bad OT's, IMO.

Every team has a couple of big sack games. We still finished ahead of 22 other teams in sack production and we created a lot of turnovers with our sacks and Qb pressures.

I think that with Brooks/Briggs/Harolson and or our new Pass Rusher that I hope we draft, we will get a more consistent pass rush.
I think that Balmer needs to be able to push Sop for playing time to balance out the Dline. I think we are good at run defense but we need a little more pressure for the pass defense and so that the oline can not stack against J. Smith. I think more balanced pressure will open up the lanes even more for our LBs. We may also end up picking another Dlineman as well. Perhaps Dunlop or D. Williams.
I also think that Goldson is now starting to play with awareness and abandon and he will be good at giving us turnovers.
I think we need a replacement for M. Lewis.
I think we need at least one more CB/FS in training that has speed and coverage skills.
Next year we should be a legitimate, all around defense. I could see us be top five if we can get the turnover development for next year as well.

Probably doesn't help we went up against the Colts and AZ. How many of the long plays came from those games?

I don't know. We've played some high-octane passing offenses this year. Minnesota (12th), Indy (1st), Houston (2nd), Arizona (10th), Philly (9th), Green Bay (4th).

I'm watching the so-called #1 NFL defense get manhandled by a team we swept - with something to play for. You simply can't believe the hype. What makes a D great is consistency and being able to be clutch when they need to be. All teams have bad games, but in this case, you MUST bring your A game to the play-offs.
Seeing the Cards handle the pack does give me hope hat we're not that far away, but neither do I buy for one second that we're good enough to win with defense week in an week out.
I think that our defense is good enough to keep us in most games. Occasional meltdown. But with Goldson coming on and Brooks coming on and someone in the draft to take Lewis's place we should have a dynamite defense. Then all we need is to have an offense that can give the defense some rest and score some points off all of those turnovers.

Yes, but the Cards came with some awesome schemes. On one play, they had an awesome combination route involving the HB out of the backfield and the WR.
Twins right, inside receiver cleared out, HB ran a circle route to that side and back into the middle, then the outside WR ran a delay 7 yard slant.
-----the HB circle pulled the OLB towards him as he circled in which opened up a perfect passing lane for the delayed slant. It was an awesome combination because if the OLB stays, then the Warner throws to the HB instead of the receiver.
I think the fact that the Cardinals didn't have Boldin, they had to get creative with the scheme.
Can't say the same for our OC.
