The top 2 rushing teams last year still averaged 27 passing attempts per game. So why wouldn't we want the best players we can possibly put out there to catch passes?
We don't really have a power running game. What we should have is a good running game. Believe me, no one is scared to tackle our running backs. They may get beat up by our line, but I think Chilo Rachal is really the only one on our line with that attribute.

I think we will be a very balanced offense. What I fear is the habit of our OC to do too much of one thing at a time. For example, the Raiders are strong against the pass, so we run, run, and run some more rather than trying to find some more routes that will work.

I'm just worried about getting into tunnel vision with a specific plan during a game.

With Walsh, he kept defenses on their toes. Even if one thing was working very well, he still hit the defense with a surprise and sooner or later, the defenses would give up game planning and just try to play hard, but by that time, they are beat.

I'm with JoeCool on this one. If the 49er's insists on running the ball the majority of the time, other teams defenses will certainly prepare for it.

Shaun Hill has good enough passing skills that they can have a mixture of the two and do quite well. BUT ... if the 49er's become TOO predictable, they're in trouble!

You can't do the run, run, pass a majority of the time and not make it obvious as we've seen in the pass. As much as most would like to believe, I don't think that the 49er's offensive line is SOOO good that they can dominate other teams.

Mental toughness is one thing but that won't get the job done all the time, you must have the physical attributes to go along with it.

"Here we come, try and stop us!" Sounds great but I don't think the 49er's are there yet!

In regards to the running backs: There are Runners, Grounders and Pounders.
Gore, Coffee and Sheets are basically runners and grounders, but physically they're not built to be pounders and if they have to consistently do that ... you're in for some injuries.

Another thing that would be nice to see is to sacrafice plays to set up the defense for later on. Let's say it's early in tha game and it is 2nd an 8 or 12. Do a draw play or something unpredictable. If it doeasn't work, who cares, but at least you have the defensive coordinater thinking about it. This is what is so great about scripting the 1st 15 plays. It keeps you unpredictable and unbias and it allows for setting up the defense later in ther game along with determining what their defensive plan is.
I think either the niners will run a balanced offense and that what we have been doing is setting the seeds in other teams minds during the preseason that we are going to run it down their throat. If they play eight man in the box then maybe mogan, bruce and davis can hit them deep. Also, I think we are getting it into our teams minds to be physical by running.

I did think we need to be more creative in the redzone, hopefully we were just doing the vanilla thing. Everytime we got into the red zone and inside the five, everthing just got condensed. I think naked boots and wildcat formations will help especially early in the season.

How about putting both Gore and Coffee in at the same time like when had Tyler and Craig? this way they won't know if its a sweep, a pitch, off tackle, or up the gut and which back is going to get it and where its going maybe even a pass or bootleg.
Great post from everyone here. Basically keep a defense guessing. Don't be afraid to mix it up and keep a good balance offense but at the same time exploit a defense weakness and attack it with what's working.Like someone posted, about the developing tunnel vision,I agree and also I feel we have a strong enough head coach that will make sure it does'nt get to that point.

gore as the bell cow on offense. and now a qb with a weak back. so much for my hope a that a chosen one would bring balance to the (offensive) force. a raven style offense is boring. I suppose I would be consoled if we WIN!

There is the key exploit the weakness on each defense and attack. The balance will be there most of the time but there will be games where the balance is tilted.
Jimmy Raye Envisions Running 60 Percent of the Time

Somehow, I get the feeling the Niners are going to be very boring to watch this season. I guess that's alright as long as they win games. But running 60% of the time...as if we defenses needed another reason to stack the box and bring up their safeties and corners to the line.
Sleep.
not much is my guess

I don't see how running sixty% of the time sound boring. The strength of our O is the running game, so why not run more plays too our strength. Plus I still feel that we will pass plenty, because like Hill said you can't always go with that ratio, sometimes you might pass more and some times you might run more. Also if our runners are averaging 5-6 yards a carry that would hardly be boring to watch. Just my opinion though. PEACE FROM THE FAN

Jimmy Raye is surely a comedian. Has he already talked with our defense about that?? We don't have a pass-rush, so I'm sorry but I expect us to fall behind early in several games. What is he going to do then? Run out the clock?

Maiocco sarcastically observed that, if the Niners do run 60% of the time, that means we won the NFC West and our defense will be in the Top 5.

Exactly why we need a strong armed QB that can keep defenses honest. I would guess that the competition between Hill and Smith might not be as over with as we think, have to wait and see how this one plays out.
