Sopa might not get the stats in the 3-4 but his pure size is enough to make him our starter.
He's a huge body that can allow our LBs to get to the Qb.
I hope. or better yet, I think that's the plan.

That's good, but he has said before he prefers end, so I'm mixed right now. We'll see. Personally, I think he's better at DT.
I don't care what position he plays on the D Line,as long as he's effective ALL YEAR
Him being effective is like Obama's stimulas plan working!!
Dude I suggest you keep politics off of this board.
Dude, its a joke, grow some thicker skin.
Um no it was an attempted joke, jokes are funny.

Maybe someone can supply some other numbers for reference, but it doesn't seem to me that a guy who's job is to use up blockers getting 58 tackles is so bad. The LB's are supposed to make the tackles in this scheme.
The guy has the bulk - 330 lbs and less than 15% bodyfat is freakish. He's very, very strong - evidently one of the strongest in the league. The only thing that bothers me about him is his mindset - he doesn't seem to want to play in the middle. He's not going anywhere, so we'll see.

so true, so true. they always talk about how strong he is, and how athletic, but how many sacks does he get? and how many times does he add pressure on the qb? unless he feels the wrath of singletary. i guess this move means no signing of a NT this year.
"According to NFL.com...In five NFL seasons, the 6-foot-2, 330-pound former Hawaii star has registered 104 career tackles and four sacks."
An impressive 4 sacks in 5 years.

Technically his "job" isn't to get sacks, it's to stuff the and occupy blockers. Not that he's particularly amazing at that, but at least he's serviceable. I wouldn't take sacks into consideration when evaluating his play.

Has Soap ever been used as a 1-gap NT? I know he had a terrible time learning his assignments as a 2-gap.

Personally -i feel like he should be in the middle occupying space and plugging holes. He just looks natural in the middle; hopefully his preference to play outside doesn't sabotage his play.
Definately not a position that rakes up glamorous numbers.

Cute. But, his job has never been to get sacks. His job has always been to occupy blockers. But, as a smart football fan, you know that so I'm not even sure what point you are making.

Hopefully the rotation will be a strength this year

No, the guy who posted this friggin sucks. Demetric Evans is getting praised as a great pickup. Well, he had 33 tackles last season. Sopoaga had 41. Soap also was instrumental in attracting double teams and allowing Justin Smith to roam freely. People who post stuff like that should have to square off with Soap face to face -- then when you're through picking yourself up hours later tell us that he sucks.
Evans started 11 games, Soap 15 games. Evans had 3.5 sacks, Soap had 1. So what???
lol at the people who say "you should have to square off with Soap face to face" and "I bet you won't say that to his face" damn he better lay us out, he's making what $5 million a year? He better lay my broke a$$ out.
The simple fact is Soap is an average DL in a 3-4 defense. He'd be better off as a DT in a 4-3 defense. If he was as good as people on here make him out to be, then the coaching staff wouldn't be having him change positions every freakin year.

If TD's and cathces were decided on which TE could bench press more weight then yes Vern would be in the Probowl.
I like Soap just as well as the next guy but the fact is he's overpaid in our defense.
*sigh* sounds like someone else I know! Whom I would not be afraid to tell him he sucks face to face!
Who?
fixed!

Why does every body keep talking about how strong he is? Obviously you need strength to play the position, but that’s only a small piece of the equation. And enough with the upper body strength talk! You move the pile with your legs, not the chest and arms. You guys remember Dana Stubblefield? The guy didn't look that big up top, but he had legs the size of tree trunks (no juice jokes please). I remember seeing him at the Hillsdale Mall in 94, he looked freakishly disproportioned. Anyways, back to my original point. I would take quickness, heart and smarts over pure muscle any day. How many times have we watched Soap get tangled up with ONE GUY and take himself completely out of the play? He doesn't suck, but he is nothing more than SERVICABLE.
