He did a good job, but no one was confusing him for a Pro Bowl QB in NE.
Green Bay doesn't have 1/5th of the talent that New England did either. Statisically New England had the best offense of all time before Cassell stepped in.

lol, you Alex Smith guys are friggin crazy.
Rodgers is 4 times the QB, Smith will never be as good.
You're wasting your time. Btw, I wouldn't say Rodgers is 4 times better. I'd say more along the lines of 2.5 to 3 times better. Ok maybe 4. Hopefully Smith can narrow the gap this season.
Have you read this thread?
It is completely crazy how far people will go because of denial... I want the kid to be a good QB, but really?
Rodgers is elite, Smith is a scrub next to him... Supporting cast or not, watch the two guys play. It is night and day.
But it was not pre-destined as such. Rogers sat and learned. He had ZERO pressure. He had little to no responsibility compared. He had superior coaching. He had one of the best all time QBs to learn from, regardless of whether that QB took an active role.
I am not saying Rogers wasn't better to begin with, but anyone who thinks Rogers would be the QB he is today, had he and Smith had swapped who had been chosen 1st, is guessing purely and there is NO disputing that.

Seems it is basically a Nature vs. Nurture debate. A lot of nature supporters here.

yeah, unfortunately, both things contribute to how a person turns out. And for the "nature" supporters, how do they know that Rodgers would perform the same if he didn't have the disappointment of not being picked #1 to fuel him? Anyone who thinks sitting in that room while sliding to the Packers didn't affect him, inspire him to go and prove everyone wrong, and that that has had an affect on his development, is being delusional.

If I hear one more excuse for Alex Smith I am going to vomit. Alex Smith will never be as good as Aaron Rodgers, and it has nothing to do with their upbringing. Alex Smith's shortcomings are exposed by the pro game, Rodgers made the transition effectively. If you swapped situations, I have serious doubt Smith would have put up back to back 4,000 yard seasons.

but you know for certain that if you swapped situations Rodgers would have had back-to-back 4,000 yard seasons?

People need to stop be so one-sided with Smith and Rogers. You put Smith on a playoff team to sit for 3 years behind a HOF QB in the same system playing a spread offense which he is the most comfortable in and would he be as successful as Rodgers? Maybe not, but he would be way better than he has been on the Niners.
If we drafted Rodgers we could be in a better situation, but your fooling yourselves if you think he would be putting up the same stats here that he is in GB.
This is pointless anyways, we have Alex, dont hate him hate Nolan for picking him. The past is never gonna change so it's ride or die time, Alex is who we have so deal with it.

look rodgers is a great qb probally the 3rd best in the nfl but there is a big difference being brought up by already a playoff team learning behing brett favre and learning the same system than
coming into a team with no offensive talent what so ever and learning a new system every year
is rodgers the better QB hell ya but no one knows for sure what wouldve happened if they traded spots my bet is that aaron wouldnt do much better than what alex has done

Rodgers is better than Alex at the pro level.
However I don't think he would be as succesful as he is now in Green Bay then if he was here in SF. Sitting behind Favre and having the same offense over the course of his career has greatly benefited Rodgers. Not too mention the offense is suited perfectly for Aaron.
If we took Aaron and GB took Alex I think Alex would be the clear cut starter in GB but I don't think he would be putting up the eye popping numbers Aaron has been.
Hopefully Alex will prove us all wrong.

i'll always pull for Rodgers because he's from the same area as me and was the QB at Butte College when I was going there.
