I have bookmarked this thread for future reference when trying to explain blind Alex fans....and saved Travisty's post (will use as a sig on another forum).

this is just ridiculous......although they are my favorite players, it doesn't matter if we didn't endup getting Willis, Vernon, ETC....

guess what...the SAINTS, Cards, Steelers, Ravens, ETC....every other football team that made it deep in the playoffs or played in the Super Bowl didn't endup getting them either......but they have fared FAR better than us over the years...

Aaron was a better QB in College than Alex
Aaron played in a Pro-Style offense compared to Alex
Aaron consistently played against tougher competition (Almost beat USC at USC with both starting WRs injured)

Aaron has proved over the years he is a better QB than Alex.

Aaron outplayed Alex last year in the 9ers vs Packers game.....with Alex having a 0.0 QB rating in the first half I believe.

THEY ARE NOT TWINS, THEY ARE NOT CLONES OF EACH OTHER.....it is just disrespectful to Aaron Rodgers hard work or any other QB to just label him as Alex as if they are clones of each other......like TonyStarks did earlier in the thread.

naming those playoff teams is pointless considering when the Niners drafted Smith they were the worst team I have ever seen on paper

for most of this video, Tim Rattay had a worse team than what Alex has had.
edit- 2:10 and forward

I think you are underestimating how important a QB is for an offense....or in Alex's case....how a QB can hold back an offense and make them look worse than they are....

I'm not saying Alex had a good team....but they were not the "worst team on paper" ever.

I saw TO in that clip, which instantly made that 9ers team better than the one Alex had.

read again what I wrote.... footage of 2:10 and forward was the 2004 season with no T.O.....the year Brandon Loyd ducked under a pass.

compare the starting rosters to Alex's first year....compare the starting rosters to Alex's second year.
coming into the Nfl , Rodgers had a way better supporting cast in coaches, players and most importantly Brett Favre to learn the demeanor it takes to succeed on & off the field.

Alex had......well we all know the story.
We need to give Rodgers his due. He's hated around here for absolutely no reason. All he did is want to play for our team when we wanted someone else. A tremendous talent is a tremendous talent. Over the past couple of years, Matt Lienart has had all the benefits Rodgers had, yet he doesn't look like half the player we see with Rodgers.

I thought Rodgers was better before he and Smith were drafted. Not that I thought we should have drafted Rodgers first overall either at the time. I wanted us to try to trade back, and even if we couldn't, I definitely didn't want us to draft Smith. But what can we do about it now? Now we just have to root for Alex and the rest of our guys.

You are saying, with a straight face, that if Rodgers had 2 major shoulder surgeries, 5 coordinators in 5 years, a crappy head coach, Lloyd and Fleck as his WRs (oh oh and don't forget the multi sport star Johnny Morton)...we'd be "MUCH" better or getting our 6th ring???

I think Rodgers would have better stats but the end result would be essentially the same. It would be the SAME sht with a different smell.

But hey...he'd have more 300 yard games.

It's so sad to see such hard football fanatics that post so much on a forum that cannot clearly see a better talent. I mean common man, regardless of situations, Aaron Rodgers throws the ball so much harder and so much more accurate than Alex.

Im not talking about excuses, brett favre, 3 years sitting, starting when you aren't ready, shoulder surgeries, different coordinators, poor OL..Im talking stragith ability to throw a football. He is leagues ahead of Alex in that department. and at a position like quarterback, it's kinda important.

Yeah. That's why I said he'd have better stats. But in the end we wouldn't be much farther along due to all the organizational dysfunction.

But I agree that Rodgers was always more NFL ready. Everyone knew that. Smith was the project who we royally fvcked.

Im sure if Joe Montana was put in Smith's position, he wouldve had the same results. Right ?

Rodgers is a better QB period. He has better mechanics and he has something that CANT be taught......INSTINCTS. GB's defense is just as talented as ours, and their offensive line is worse. As for talent.............Im sorry, but Greg Jennings and Donald Driver dont give me goosebumps, so that excuse is invalid as well. We have better RBs and better TEs.

Rodgers does more with what he has than Smith does. For Smith to play well, he needs a probowl surrounding cast.........which he kinda does, yet he still fails. Rodgers doesnt.

For those that cant see that, get over yourselves.

When did Alex fail with a pro bowl caliber offense?

Hmm that's weird.
The Niners clearly made a mistake drafting Smith. His career is coming to it's inevitable conclusion this year. His starting job will end even sooner, because his job is tide to leading the team to wins and that's something he hasn't shown the ability to do.

The latest incident where he initially blamed his blown potential TD throw on miscommunication between him and Davis, rather than his own inaccuracy shows the weakness of his character.

It sucks that the team missed out on Rodgers, but it has a chance to remedy that by developing Nate Davis. If Smith continues to be underwhelming (he will against the Vikings pass rush) and Davis looks good, then the coaching staff will start preparing to make Davis the eventual starter this year.

They won't publicly announce it, they'll just slowly give Davis more reps and a promotion to the #2 spot with the intention of quickly pulling the trigger during the 1st or 2nd unexcusable performance and loss by Alex Smith. Smith is going to face 5 good coaching staffs to start the season, his track record says he'll fail. I can't wait until the team moves on and starts reaching it's potential.

You might not like the smugness of my post, but you can't offer any evidence based on Alex Smith's past performances to credibly argue that the outcome will be different.

First off, why single me out? When did I was say I was an Alex fan? He's a Niner and our starting QB so I am going to wish nothing but great things for him. My argument was to enlighten some narrow people into open minded thought. The teams you state did not get to the playoffs only because of QB play. Its a collective of different players stepping up at the right time that wins games. Therefore my point was had we become a better team with Rodgers as our QB then some of the talent we have may not be around. Therefore we may have been stuck with mediocre WRs, MLB, TE, OL. You couldn't even guesstimate how different the draft/free agency or any of that would have played out. Us picking Alex caused a chain of events to happen the made the Niners into who we are now as a team.

Yeah things would be different, but you can't assume we would be stuck with average talent at all of those positions. Our drafts haven't been perfect over the past years and things could have played out for the better. We miss out Davis and our next likely selection that year was Ngata. Yeah that would suck. Now you can scratch Balmer off our draft history too.

This thread is rife with assumptions that can't be made.

Why this Smith BS continues, I don't know. Seemingly everybody accepts that this is the final year for Smith if he fails. If he does, there will be a new QB to b!tch about next year. A new pleyr (QB, LB, CB, DE depending on which player performs well in a given season) we should've drafted. More points to rehash over and over again.

I agree. This is the year to validate what Alex is, either a fail or a success. But while he's still a member of the Niners, I will cheer for him wholeheartedly. I refuse to cheer for Rodgers on the "what might have been" premise. Taking no credit away from him, he is a really good QB, but at the same time a Packer. And I hate the Packers.

Not necessarily. If he fails miserably yeah this is his last year, but if he plays like he did last year and we win the division in what might be the worse division in the history of the NFL we might feel compelled to extend him.
Blah blah blah.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

I feel sorry for those that dwell on the "coulda shoulda".

Had Alex been placed in Aaron's shoes I'd put money on it that he'd be leaps and bounds ahead of where he is now. And had Aaron been in Alex's shoes really wouldn't have made a difference on the horrible teams that we have had.
we would be in the same place we are now.

We might be worse....Smith never had a wr, Rogers had 2 pro bowlers driver and Jennings not to mention a good ol and OC....also, since he likes to hold the ball for FAR TO LONG.....he would probably have taken more sacks, been injured more and cost us even more games.....he would be looking for a wr to get open all day while on his @ss b/c the OL is so bad. Until recently, Rodgers had a terrible OL. Bottom line is that we would have a better QB than we have now, since Rodgers is the better QB and always has been. Alex can't hit a swing pass to save his life. That has nothing to do with his supporting cast or coaches. He still looks uncomfortable in the pocket, no poise. Again, has nothing to do with these outside factors. A great QB makes everyone around him better, not the other way around.

As far as the butterfly effect, plenty of studs have been drafted in the second half of the 1st round or in later rounds. This is what separates the elite teams from the rest of the pack. They find talent all over the place. Ed Reed, Palumolu, Oher, Clady, Revis, Jahri Evans, Flacco, Brees, Rothlesberger, etc...were not drafted withing the first five picks. We could have had an even better core with smart choices at lower picks.
