For some crazy reason majority of those OC coordinators were successful with their new QB's as soon as they were hired.

A. Rodgers is exceled in the 1st year with McCarthy
Rivers excelled in the 1st year Turner took over in SD

It could be that Alex got Hostler fired rather than Hostler was a bad coach?

I think he could have had us at 10-6 last year and maybe a first round play-off win. This year I believe we go as Alex goes, and I hope he has a good year. If not time to draft a QB in 2011.

This thread can't seem to stay on topic. The question is what if we selected Rodgers over Smith. Not if Rodgers played on our team last season. The team wouldn't exist with the same players (assuming good QB play from Rodgers)

That brings up several more questions.
Would Nolan still be HC?
Would we have been in position to take Vernon, Willis, Crabtree, Iupati, Davis?

Back then, this team was one of the worst EVER. If Rodgers were selected, and did a great job as many think he would have done (I really doubt it, the team was awful top to bottom), would the 49ers be able to build the core of the team as well as they have done? (With Vernon, Willis, Crabtree).

This is probably true but I hope you're wrong. I don't believe Alex is good enough to take us anywhere. I'm hoping the players around him as well as the defense can lead us to being a force this season.

this is just ridiculous......although they are my favorite players, it doesn't matter if we didn't endup getting Willis, Vernon, ETC....

guess what...the SAINTS, Cards, Steelers, Ravens, ETC....every other football team that made it deep in the playoffs or played in the Super Bowl didn't endup getting them either......but they have fared FAR better than us over the years...

I saw TO in that clip, which instantly made that 9ers team better than the one Alex had. Idk if you guys fully realize how talentless that team was. I doubt any of our starters then could have started for any other team, we were playing with a JV squad. Srsly, the way the 9ers roster was completely stripped of talent was criminal. That is not the right situation for any young QB.

Now i'm not defending Smith or saying he will be a stud. I'm saying that ANY rookie QB thrown into that mix would have failed. Having a defensive minded HC who threw his players under the bus exacerbated an already horrible situation.

The right thing to do would have been to keep a veteran QB around (Garcia). I never really understood why Nolan, a defensive guy, would draft a QB. Keep the vet QB around, and build the team to your strength(defense). It was obvious Nolan had no idea what he was doing...

But the past is the past, we can all agree that if Alex doesnt show up this yr, its his last...and i'm ok with that.

Jeff Garcia was released in 2004; a full year before Mike Nolan was hired. As the team began the off-season above the salary cap, the 49ers had no other option but to release Garcia after he refused to renegotiate his contract.

At the time, Tim Rattay was the veteran guy. Despite battling injuries, Rattay started more games for the 49ers in 2003 and 2004 than any other Quarterback on the active roster. Many 49ers fans (including those around here today) thought Rattay was the answer.

In hindsight, Nolan would have been wise to sign a veteran Quarterback like Kurt Warner or Brad Johnson. This blunder was just one of the many reasons why Mike Nolan isn't the Head Coach.
