MadDog's Pre-Combine Big 175 Board

On the backend of February already, and days before the 2013 NFL Combine, here is my second stab at the Big Board, which increased from 100 to 175 players. My goal is to have a Big 200 soon after the combine.

This Big Board is NOT A MOCK DRAFT. Sorry for having to put in bold for the vets who know how this works. Mock drafts are silly beyond the first handful of picks, since trading is a major part of the whole process. In fact, more than 1/3 of all picks will be traded, so it is better to project an area where a player might be selected, rather than an exact team at an exact spot, which is like plowing the sea. In a perfect world, I would hit on all players at all slots, like Chris Culliver at number 80 two years ago. That is not my goal, but rather a projected area where the player should fall.

If my Excel Spreadsheet has played tricks on me, and you see Matt Barkley playing center for Rutgers, please let me know. That would obviously be hilarious...and inaccurate. I strive to spell correctly, so please help if you see an error. Finally, please add feedback, as I may be insane to leave off a favorite player or two. I will explain my rationale. Cheers.

Some notes on those falling and rising: I think the draft will see zero MLB's go in the first round, but be clustered in the second with the big three: Ogletree, Manti, and Minter all going somewhere in the 35-55 range. I perceive only two WR's and one RB going in the first, with Patterson climbing over a descending Allen, and Lacy being challenged, but not surpassed by Bernard. I also see medicals playing into the first round, with Jarvis Jones neck causing concern enough to drop him out of the top ten picks. Finally, I'd bet the house, farm, kids, and dog that Luke Joeckel will be drafted first overall. The big question is from number 2 down.

Thanks for all your work MD, interesting list! I realize this is not a mock but it seems to have players valued ahead of most SF mocks, where Jones and J Williams are very popular. The top two TEs at 31 and 32 seems to be a change? I see the CBS list also has these guys in the 30s, with Ertz ahead.

When I look at a list like this it reinforces just how much difference there is in picking low or high in a round. I like to look at picking 31st as if the niners do not have a first round pick...easier on me when they draft and all the darlings are gone!

Thanks, Mad. Much appreciated.
I sure hope your right and Patterson falls to 19th but this WR is moving up the rankings i've seen him as high as 6th - 9th.
Terrance Williams, Baylor is entered twice. At 67 and 102. What do I win?
Ok, aside from being a smart a$$, I love it. If the draft were to fall that way, I'd totally get behind moving down from #31 as Kawaan Short, John Jenkins, and Sylvester Williams are all available later in the draft. That would give Baalke more ammo to move up from a lower pick higher into the 2nd to get a true blue chipper.

However, based on Baalke's track record, he'll probably just draft the player he likes at #31 instead of chance missing out on them in a trade down (even though they could upgrade their next pick with the extra value).

Toaster on the way.

Could go earlier, but surely could go later. These early entry guys have a lot to win and lose over the combine and campus workouts.
maddog. Do you think David Amerson is a safety or a corner in the nfl ? He had a great 2011 season but was abused in 2012.

Amerson will be a corner in the NFL.. he reminds me of Todd Lyght..

Thanks MD. Great job as always. After the combine in your spare time, would it be possible to come out with a list denoting your personal rankings of this years class.
I think Amerson is a safety in the NFL. He was exposed big time in 2012 as a CB.

Montgomery at 40 is a crime!

... but overall, I like what you do, MD. Catapano at 174 shows me you really do your homework. But you iz wrong about Montgomery.. he better than 40.
Based on MD's ranking and my extreme personal bias's, here is how I would draft if it really did fall this way:

#31 Kawaan Short

trade #61 + #109 for #53
#53 Brandon Williams

Trade Alex Smith to the Chiefs for #63 (3rd)
#63 Travis Kelce

#74 Justin Hunter

#93 Bacarri Rambo (this should probably be a CB, but I really want him. Also I think the Niners will treat the CB spot like they did the DT spot last draft)

4th Round Comp: David Bass 3/4 OLB

Trade172 + 191 for 136
#136 Brandon Mcgee

#159 Lonnie Pryor (if he falls a bit)

Ran out of MD rankings
Whats your take on C/G Mario Benevides, Louisville? He was a finalists for the Remington award. I noticed he wasn't given an invite for the combine. In my opinion he is a top 3 center prospect in this years draft.
