Team chairman Clark Hunt is the latest Kansas City senior exec to suggest that the Chiefs will go in another direction after he was quoted in the Kansas City Star as saying "there's probably not that franchise quarterback who will be sitting there like there was last year, but you still have a lot of options in terms of trades or just taking a player who can really help you upgrade with that #1 pick." Earlier this year new Chiefs' head coach Andy Reid and new G.M. John Dorsey had both said pretty much the same thing about their thoughts on the top pick.
There has been a lot of speculation about the Niners trading Alex Smith to the Chiefs for a draft pick. If the above quote is true, one possible scenario is that the Chiefs trade down and use the extra picks to off-set the value of trading for Smith.
Obviously, they have to find a trading partner, but with the new rookie wage scale, trading down is not as difficult. Ironically, the Chiefs are in a similar situation as the year the Niners drafted Alex Smith. Perhaps they will go a different direction...and still land Smith on draft day.

Please give the 2nd rounder for Alex. Personally, I feel this is a weak draft class - I'd much rather have picks in next year's draft when the talent is supposed to great.

I don't disagree with this, but I think that is often said of several drafts.
I think if the Niners want a high draft pick, maybe the best option is a low pick this year with a conditional pick next year is the easiest to swallow for a team like KC that has so many needs to fill.
However, the entire point of this thread is that KC moving down from #1 and getting extra picks would subsidize the KC cost of trading for Alex.

One of the 49ers 6th or 7th round picks + Alex Smith for the Chiefs 2nd round pick.

I don't think we need to give up anything besides Alex Smith. Swapping 2nd round picks with the Chiefs for them acquiring Alex Smith seems fair to me. The Chiefs get a young QB, the the prime of his career that is ready to play now, and they keep still get to have a 2nd round pick. The difference between pick 33 (580 points) and pick 64 (270 points) is 310 points which is the value of a 2nd round pick (59 overall). Considering what QBs who have done less have gone for, I think this is more than fair for the Chiefs. I don't know why Alex Smith for a 2nd round seems so unreasonable considering less proven guys were traded for more and were paid more money.

The Chiefs are stuck between a rock and a hard place. They have zero talent at QB on their roster and nobody in the draft that qualifies as a franchise QB. Let's hope they DON'T find a trading partner for their top pick and overpay the Niners for Alex Smith.

I think a possible scenario is the Niners trading their 2nd round pick (number 64)+ Alex Smith to the Chiefs for pick 34.
Win win
KC gets to keep their coveted draft picks albeit a second rounder at the end plus a qb
The Niners pick at 32 and 34.
The trade value chart this scenario also makes sense. Or simply swapping picks in rounds 3,4,5,6 and 7 and we give them no picks.

This sure will be very interesting. Some VERY interesting takes in this post.
Baalke is a shrewd dude and I'm sure we'll do very well.
Personally, I'd be happy with a 3rd this year or a 2nd next year in exchange for Alex.

Page 2 of this thread has some Chiefs fans reactions to the Alex + #64 for #34.
They all seem to be in favor of it...

It would be more like thier first for Alex and our 1st and 2nd. Our 1st is basically an early 2nd and our 2nd an early 3rd.
