Maddog, big question (or questions!) I hope you can answer: You are the GM and have the stockpile of picks to play with. Do you have a player you would target at a certain position and say, trade up, even if its in the top ten? Or would you keep the value and stay put to take BPA because you see players in our slot that can help our biggest needs (as in DL)? Or do you make it a point to resign Sopoaga FIRST and then make your draft need decisions?

Four players I would personally put in the Top 100... (coincidentally I think all four players would be good value and PERFECT fits for the 49ers 3rd round selections):
Chase Thomas- OLB- Stanford
Jordan Reed- TE- Florida
Gavin Escobar- TE- SDSU
Leveon Bell- RB- Michigan St.

Ertz over Eifert? I think that shocks a lot of people.

The top teams in the NFL had 20 INT's this year. The bottom teams had less then 10. The Niners had 8. With the Niners abitlity to bottle up the run and pressure the QB, that number is way too low.
The Niners will surely draft secondary, and I'd be surprised if it does not happen with a first or second day selection. Deep safety class. Deep corner class.
You think we trade up since we have 14 picks?
With significant needs at WR, DL and secondary, I would expect to see a lot of wheeling and dealing to get players that can help sooner rather later. A lot of the extra picks are deep in the draft so they won't have a lot of value. The big question is what they might get for Alex Smith. If they only got three players but they filled the above needs, it would be a good draft.

Not me. Ertz is a good blocker. Complete TEs that are legitimate threats are tough to find.

I think we will deal at least half of our picks, either up or down. I'd be very surprised if the team came away with 14 new players. Expect ten at the most. Maybe additional future draft picks will be in the picture.

The window for free agency starts well before the draft, so the team has to figure out the future for Goldson and Sopoaga, along with a few other players (Alex Smith, Walker, etc.) before targeting anyone.
The cost of moving from 31 to 10 is pretty substantial, and I am not sure there would be a gigantic difference in the quality of the players, depending on position. Shockingly enough, the team has some substantial holes to fill over the next couple of years, so they could sit back and let the draft fall to them, if they desire. Looking at the roster, the team still needs a legit number two WR, a center for 2013 or 2014, a couple of CB's, at least one more safety, a starting caliber RB for 2014 and beyond, and certainly DL help. So, the team could simply select the best player on their board, and outside of QB and ILB, they probably have a guy who can step in Year One or Two and start right away.

Might be. The WR position, along with QB, might be the most fluid position in the draft. You have a big number of underclassmen who could become first rounders or fourth rounders. The combine and campus workouts are going to make or break their wallets soon. A lot riding on very little.

Thomas really struggled at the Senior Bowl. Not big or fast enough to beat OT's around the edge, yet not nimble enough to cover backs and TEs coming out of the backfield. A big step back during Senior Bowl week.
Not ten minutes after posting this Big Board did I realize that I projected Reed far too low. Just a brain fart for sure. He looks like a high third rounder to me who might crack the first two rounds.
Escobar looks to be a player all over scouts' board. Some seem to love him, others seem to think he is far too one-dimensional. Probably see him inside the top 100 next time, but he may be a guy drafted early fourth and just misses out.
I have my doubts that Bell cracks the top 100. I see him as more of a 5th round pick than a 3rd rounder.
We will see.

Not me, there's a few draft boards that have Ertz over Eifert. I'm wary about ND players in general.

ESPN had a good article today comparing him to Boldin in terms of being very physical, tough and using his body well to catch passes.

for you draft nerds, is this a talented AND deep draft? If so, maybe we should keep all 14 picks

No, not at all. However there is good value at certain positions such as CB.
