Because a TRUE double threat in the RZ is not good...aduuuu
I'm not doubting Fleener's game. I just don't think it's wise to spend a 1st round pick on a TE when we already have an ELITE TE in VD. We need more help at WR and OG and CB. If we want a true RZ threat, then why not get a WR to learn behind Moss/Manningham.
I'd be fine with Fleener if VD was nearing the end of his career or wasn't that good, but that's not the case. I'd rather take the Best Available WR, G or CB and draft a TE in round 3 or 4.
The flip side is try to cover Fleener and Vernon Davis both in a 2 TE set. Not very fun. And he's better than any WR available at #30.
Im with you on that SD 9ers. If we ran a standard 1 TE O, then yes, he's not valuable. But we run multi TE sets on almost every play. I think two ELITE TE's worked out fine for the Pats. Fleener can be the tall RZ threat like Gronk and VD can be the dynamic route running pass catcher like Hernandez. Not sure why people view Fleener as a backup especially with the way the Pats paved the way and how the Stanford offense operated. Go back and check the Stanford stats with the best QB in the league at the helm.
2011
TE = 20 TDs
WR's = 8 TDs
We do not run a WR centric offense, it is centered around the TE's making plays down the field. WIth Crabtree and Manningham locked into starting spots the next 2-3 years, Fleeber would make more of an impact than any WR we draft. Walker can then work into the FB/H-back role. Colby is such a perfect fit.

I would love to add Colby but your stats are flaws if we didn't have the crappy we we had then we wouldn't be forced.to run all those TE sets and really our only threat was Vernouj

So Stanford didnt have any WR's? They ran the same system with the best QB in the nation and didnt feed their WR's any big stats. The Stanford staff worried about recruiting TE's over WR's for a reason, its the type of offense we run. I think we have enough WR's to make it work in this O. A healthy Crabtree, a solid Manningham, a year better Williams ( gulp ) and a deep threat in Moss. Where would a rookie fit in this year? Fleener fits in right now with this team. Compared to any WR at 30....he's just as fast, has as high of a vert, has as good of hands and is a better red zone threat. If his skill set is as good as Randle or Jeffery or Hill, but fits into a position of need ( 2nd TE ), how doesn't it not make sense to draft this guy??
Imagine 75% of the snaps like this....
Manningham
Crabtree
Davis
Fleener
Gore
Or a short yardage set of
Moss split wide to keep the D honest
Davis
Fleener
Miller
Gore
Or a jumbo set with the same players above but Boone instead of Moss. You would have to respect Davis and Fleeners ability to burn you deep on either side. You cant double anyone. Where would a 1st round WR fit in? 4 WR sets? We hardly run any in this O. I would rather pick 6'4" 220 LB WR Quick in the 3rd and have him basically learn for a year or two.

My dream scenario next week is to trade our first pick to the Raiders for their 1st next year and their 4th this year, and then trade our 2nd this year to the redskins for their first next year and then draft a OG, WR and TE in the third and fourth rounds.
...BOSS!

For some reason, I keep coming back to Derek Wolfe DE Cincinnati. He could be the next Justin Smith. Plays very well against the run and can also rush the passer. Perfect size for 3-4 DE and was the Big East Defensive Player of the year. Would love to see him on the Niners!

kendall wright. we have kyle williams and plenty of small wr. not sold on him being a playmaker in nfl.
After the article today, add Bruce Irvin to my list. I'm not sure what Barrows is smoking, or if he was just messing with us the way he thinks Baalke is by dropping the hint that there is a player they are targeting with the #30 pick, but NO THANKS. Not because we don't need another pass rusher, because I would be fine with a guy like Mercilus if available and the Niners went that way. But Irvin is VERY undersized and the clip from the Clemson game shows him getting eaten up on more than half of the snaps they showed. And not only does he have character issues, he doesn't even recognize that he has them. In the article he states that he's changed, that he ran with the wrong crowd in high school and now he's "not BJ anymore, he's Bruce". Well "Bruce" just got arrested a month ago so sell that stuff somewhere else.

Last year the 9ers picked up numerous players who played important rolls: Aldon and Miller will be starters this year, Hunter and Culliver are next up guys, and Kilgore may be a starter but will be, at least, an important back up.
So this year they just need a player to help the OLine and back ups at other positions--WR, OLB, DT and S. It looks like a very reasonable task for the FO to accomplish.

I wouldn't mind Fleener but it would be the predictable pick. I don't want them to draft a gay ass G or a gay ass C in the first round.

Jeffery, because I don't trust a WR who is capable of having bigger man titties than me

Dont want any WR in round 1 at the expense of taking a top OG. The WR depth in this draft is great and the Niners can grab someone in rds 2 or 3.
