Mock Offseason

This is meant to be a little out of the ordinary since so many mocks on here are basically the same, hopefully you enjoy it.

Not Re-signed:

QB Alex Smith
He's not a ten million dollar man. I love his character and he had a solid season, but the 49ers protected him throughout the year. They can do the same thing with a much cheaper quaterback. 2 years and 10 million with 3 million in incentives each year is all I'd offer him.

CB Carlos Rogers
He came to San Francisco on a one year contract to play his way into a big contract. Behind the best front seven in football he had a great season and is looking to cash in. The front seven is more important than the secondary, the 49ers should pass on spending big money on a 30+ corner.

WR Ted Ginn
He cut 1.2 off his salary this year to become a free agent a year sooner. He had an amazing season as a returner but he brings very little to the passing attack. He's going to demand more than he is worth which the 49ers wont match.

MLB Tavares Gooden
I want him back but he stayed healthy all year which has been his biggest problem throughout his career. He has some amazing speed and a linebacker needy 4-3 team will take a chance to see if he is starter material.

TE Justin Peele
FS Reggie Smith
RG Chilo Rachal
FS Madieu Williams

Re-signed:

OLB Ahmad Brooks
The heart of the 49ers defense is their front seven. Brooks has matured into an a complete player and is more important to the 49ers defense than Carlos Rogers or Dashon Goldson.

FS Dashon Goldson
He and Rogers are looking for a big payday and I believe the 49ers will have to choose one. Culliver is behind Rogers at corner, no one is behind Goldson at safety. Goldson will get the tag for a year since his numbers are well beyond his actual value.

OG Adam Snyder
Fans complain about him, but he had a decent year. He wont be expensive and he'll be able to compete with Kilgore for the starting right guard position next year. As nice as it would be to sign Carl Nicks or draft a guard early, there is just too much money along the line for the 49ers to justify doing anything different.

WR Josh Morgan
He'll sign a 1 year deal with the team due to his injury.

MLB Larry Grant
He'll get a second round tender to provide depth at MLB. There is no proven depth behind Willis and Bowman if Grant leaves.

MLB Blake Costanzo
He's a special teams ace who the coaches love. He'll be back.

S CJ Spillman
He hasn't shown anything on defense to warrant consideration from another team. With that said, the team was high on him at the start of camp this past year and could potentially see more playing time on defense. He'll contribute on special teams no matter what.

Free Agency:

QB Josh Johnson
He's Harbaugh's boy and his athleticism allows the 49ers to design an offense that fits both Johnson and Kaepernick. They both have the ability to extend plays with their mobility and add another dimension to the running game. The 49ers save a lot of money by signing Johnson over Smith plus the offense fits both quaterbacks instead of only the starter.

The 49ers will be very patient in free agency just like last year. Smart franchises avoid the early frenzy of free agency... the 49ers are finally a smart franchise. Once the market has calmed down the 49ers will go after players who slip through the cracks, like Carlos Rogers last year.

Draft: - I haven't followed the draft that closely this year so I'm not that familiar with the prospects right now. Now that the season is over, that'll change but this mock is heavily influence by OnTheClock and MadDog49er's opinions.

1- The 49ers trade the 30th pick for a 2nd(early 40's), 3rd(around 110), and a 4th(around 140).

2a- Kendall Reyes DE 6-4 300 UCONN
It's never too early to build on your defensive line. MadDog is a fan of him, so I'm a fan of him. Defensive linemen need to be relentless and that's all I hear about Reyes. Linemen can take time to develop and he'll have two of the best 3-4 ends to learn from.

2b- Josh Norman CB 6-0 203 Coastal Carolina
The 49ers will need a corner early with the departure of Rogers. This is another guy MadDog has spoken highly of, he fits into my mock so he's the pick.

3- Chris Rainey WR/RB/KR/PR 5-8 178 Florida
Speed kills and Rainey has it. With quarterbacks who can extend plays like fatboy Ben Rapistburglar, undersized speed demons will be an important part of the 49ers new offense. He'll inject some speed into the backfield on occasion but his main responsibility will be wide receiver and special teams.

4a- Robert Turbin RB 5-9 216 Utah State
This guy is a ball of muscle who isn't afraid of contact. I'm a huge fan of short running backs because they're so hard to get under. You don't have to weigh 240 pounds to be a power back, having the mindset that you're the Hulk works much better. The video is 5 minutes long(worth it in my opinion), but skip to 2 minutes in if you don't have patience.

4b-Devon Wylie WR 5-9 186 Fresno State
More speed and quickness outside for the 49ers. Following the Steelers approach to the passing game, we get a fast, quick receiver who will be deadly on plays that Kaep or Johnson extend. I think his speed will get him draft much higher than the sixth, which is why I took him this early. He'll fit in very will with a Steelers type of passing attack.

5a- Donte Paige-Moss OLB 6-4 260 North Carolina
He made a jackass of himself on his way out of college and declared after a serious knee injury. He may not be mature, but he has amazing talent and is worth the flyer in the fifth round. A year on IR with Jim Leavitt in his ear and pros like Patrick Willis and Justin Smith in his face could turn Paige-Moss into the steal of the draft.

5b- Robert Golden CB/S 5-11 200 Arizona
I needed a secondary player in this area so I stole this pick from OTC. As usual, OTC did an excellent job with his write up so I'd recommend reading it.

6- Tank Carder MLB 6-2 236 TCU
This is the guy who broke up the pass against Wisconsin during the Rose Bowl. As a Wyoming fan I've been able to watch him for a few years and enjoyed his energy. I think he could be a very good special teams player for the team early in his career.

7- Greg Childs WR 6-3 215 Arkansas
Here is a big receiver finally. I feel the big receivers in this draft all have big question marks or are out of the 49ers range. Greg Childs has a lot of potential which makes him a perfect late round selection for this team.

An undrafted free agent:

Gabe Knapton OLB 6-3 252 Wyoming
Some notes about Knapton: He started at defensive tackle instead of defensive end this year because of injuries inside. He's about helping the team rather than himself. He fits the blue collar team first mentality perfectly, bringing him into camp would be a good move.

Several things...

You say smart franchises avoid the early part of free agency...while I see your point we got Justin Smith a few years about for a good price and look how that turned out...(counter point is Nate Clements which is why it goes both ways)

Also I dont know how I feel about Reyes...but wouldnt be pissed...and Rainey is a sneaky pick and one I love...I think Harbaugh and our offense would utilize his specific skills better than most NFL teams. Using him in a similar way to Percy Harvin is how I see him (althought I think Harvin is much better and was a 1st rounder.)
Finally, I agree with you about signing Goldson long term over Rogers if it came down to picking one. Younger and IMO more important to our team.

Good job tho...but do you really trust Josh Johnson and Colin Kaepernick?

since in ur mock we arent signing alex smith or Carlos Rogers, why arent we picking up someone valuable in FA. Alex and Carlos were guna take between 15-20 mil together so we would have a s*** load of cap space left. You throw in Finnegan and and someone like colston or meachem and you got yourself a deal
I would NOT let alex go.

What has he done? I like the guy but he is an average quarterback who led the 49ers to have an average to below average season offensively. He's afraid to let loose, much of which is by design but I honestly feel that the 49ers can get equal production from a cheaper quarterback who can add to the run game. Harbaugh knows how to protect his quarterbacks, he'll do it with Johnson or Kaep or Smith. Let's save a ton of money and put a playmaker behind center. We may have more turnovers but we'll have more explosive plays too. The 49ers won't be able to count on an absurd +28 turnover ratio again next year, the offense is a serious concern right now.

Is this kind of garbage still going on? What has he done? Were you in space for the last month? 5 passing TDs, 1 rushing and no ints in two playoff games...STFU dude...enough with the hate-alex garbage already. He has officially obliterated all the alex haters at this point.

the offennse is a cocern because our crappy wr corps

our onky decent option is vd and he and alex scored our last 4 to 5 tds so clearly qb isn't the problem add another legit threag offense will improve other than crabs who is a #2 wr at best which other wr would see playing time not just on any playoff team but any other nfl team
so we lose smith and rogers and our wrs are still the same other than a returning morgan and 2 rookies who are like 5'9" and a 7th rd wr? dont like losing rogers or smith and if we do we best use some of the cap space we'll have to go after a wr or 2 in fa. i do like the rainey pick dont get me wrong but as a rookie i want him as the 4th behind fa addition, crabtree and morgan using rainey in a package and as a decoy to make things easier for the possession wrs like crabtree and morgan
You win the most bizarre mock award to this point.

When I look at your roster I see almost as many positions made weaker than strengthened...would like the opposite of that. Several big areas are weaker:

DBs--if they have to rely on backups due to injuries they will have to bring in totally untested players
OL--cutting loose Rachal doesn't bother me but bringing in no backup? Kilgore may be ready and then Snyder could be the back up for both OC and RG but why not bring in another strong player to replace Rachal? Hall and Kilgore are untested.
RB--Going small, smaller and now small again? I'm not as down on Dixon as many are, so I don't like this change.

And then there is Josh Johnson coming in with the assumption that Harbaugh can use him as he did in college. Big assumption! I like the idea of bringing him in to replace one of the young guys but not replacing the only tested vet on the team.
