Do people really think we're set with alex smith????or do people think a LG is simply more important than a QB? Or is it actually something about Claussen himself?

It would be hard to pass up if he is there at 17, for sure. Personally, I am an Alex Smith supporter and think he has gotten a bad deal here in SF. With that said, the Niners window of opportunity is in these next couple of years while the core of the team is still young. The QB situation needs to be solved ASAP to get a shot at the big dance.

What the hell is so special about Clausen anyway? All his brothers were decent in college too, but none of them had pro talent. What makes everyone so sure he does?

So because his brothers suck, he's supposed to too? All I know is, if it wasn't for him Notre Dame wouldn't of even been in competition in the games they were in. He kept them in the game everytime. And I'm not saying draft a QB then start him now. Draft one and sit him until Alex screws up or sucks. Worst case scenario, we have 2 good QBs. Would any of you be upset with that?

And as for Nate Davis, if a guy has a whole year to learn a pretty simple playbook, he's got problems. It's not like he's learning Martz system. Ours is pretty easy. That tells me 1 of 2 things. He's either dumber than we thought, or he doesn't put enough effort. What was it he said? 11 probowls in 8 years of playing lol.

Has Clausen EVER had a winning season? IDK. If this team needed a qb that badly, I would make a traqde and get Campbell before I draft this guy. ND attracts some of the BEST recruits and I can't understand why the kid could not get them into any major bowls. I just don't see ANYTHING special about him.

So the fact that ND did not go to any bowl games has everything to do with Clausen and nothing to do with a porous OL and defense ?

He has a strong arm. He is accurate. He is from a pro style offense. He knows how to operate from under center very effectively. He is underestimated in this draft IMO. He may turn out to be the best QB in this draft.

I don't really want him. But if the 49ers picked him I would understand why. As long as he turned out I could live with it.

And BTW a lot of those photos circulating on the net are photoshop...

Good post.

Like I've said before, there's no harm in having a contingency plan if Smith doesn't work out. QB is the most important position...you have to get it right. The whole idea of building a team first and then getting a QB is nonsense. A good QB will make an average team great. You don't need all-stars at every position (yes even on the offensive line) if you have a good QB.

Not saying Clausen is the answer or that Smith isn't...I'd just rather have more options than Alex Smith, David Carr, and Nate Davis.

What do you see in Clausen that would suggest to you that he will be a better NFL QB? Alex produced 62 total TDs in 26 games. Clausen produced 65 Tds in 35 games. Alex was and still is more physically gifetd than most, and certainly smarter too.

He played in a pro style offense and is comfortable and effective under center...

But he still hasnt faced an NFL quality defense. Not only that but Notre Dame plays some real snot balls every year too. I dont buy the "he played in a pro style offense" as a reason he will succeed in the NFL.

Both QB's played in 2 completely different styles of offenses, and stats don't tell the whole story as to who would be the better QB in the NFL. If stats told the whole story then why isn't Tim Tebow the consensus #1 overall pick ?

A pro style system asks the QB's to do much much more than what a QB in a spread offense is asked to do. Jimmy also faced much more adversity at ND than Alex did at Utah. Go back and watch film of Jimmy Clausen and what he faced how much help he got from his defense and look at the difference between each of his 3 seasons then come back and let's talk.

It really depends on who needs a QB, but I would shocked, shocked if Clausen fell out of the top 10. QBs don't usually fall.
I would be shocked also if he fell to us. We would have to snatch him up though, his scouting report is lovely. How coud you pass on him with our uncertainty?

I really, really hope this is all posturing and that the team doesn't want this guy. Maybe they are just trying to scare someone above them to trade up, possibly bumping a player they really want down one more slot???

9 inch hands are small? is this stretched from tip of thumb to tip of pinky across, or from top of wrist to top of middle finger?
