Ummm...we don't have a good QB though. Hill is an amazing backup who can come in and win games when you need him too, but clearly not a starter---a relief pitcher, and a damn good one--but that's it. Smith is trash. He's always been prone to turnovers, and yesterday's game is no different. Clearly, he is not, and has never been, the answer. I don't want to get into this was his fault this wasn't his fault, but can you really say he's good enough? Truth is, this is a QB league. I want Brady, I want Manning, I want Rivers, Ryan etc. This is the 40f***ing9ers for f***'s sake! This is the greatest QB franchise in history and out roster is now comprised for a backup, a turnover machine and an idiot who thinks that someone went to the pro-bowl 10 times after having played only 6 seasons. We need OL help, we need a Safety, we NEEEED a pass rusher. I agree with all that. But without a QB in this game you don't have anything. The Colts without Bob Sanders are a superbolw contender with a much smaller chance of winning. The Colts without Manning would be a borderline playoff contender.

On the reverse end though if you bust on a 1st round QB you set yourself back 3 years minimum. See Alex. The main reason people are clamoring for a Tackle, safety or whatever is they're not impressed by Claussen or Locker or Bradford.

I agree with you 100% if the QB grades out, but when there's doubt it's best to avoid and take your chances elsewhere.
Can we get some kind of package deal like a 2 for 1 deal
& get Colt McCoy & bring his buddy along Shipley along

Historically the best teams in the NFL are solid in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

With that in mind I think our top needs this off-season are:

1. Re-sign Franklin. Our DL is really solid now, among the best in the league IMO and Franklin is a big reason why. Franklin's play the 2nd half of last year and the 1st half of this year has been eye opening. Granted Franklin is NOT a 2 gapper like Ngota or Wilfork but he is proving to be an excell ent 1 Gap NT, this is disruptive and makes plays behind the line of scrimmage. He won't come cheap. I would rather we sign him rather than tag him, since tagging only seems to create acrimony between the player and the team.

2. Improve the OL by whartever means. Start by hiring the best OL coach out there. Then use our entire draft if needed (jk) to improve our OL. It appears as of now that we will have 3 picks in the top 50, unless we make a trade. my guess something like 12, 18, and 45. That should enable us to acquire a OT like, Williams or Bulaga as well as a top OG, Lupati or whomever. There are only a few really good OT's in this years draft and we will likely have to take one with our first pick if we want one.

3. Pass rush specialist. We need someone who can consistently get pressure on the QB. Without someone who can bring the heat, our secondary will be exploited. More likely than not this would be a edge rushing OLB (Will) that has the speed and moves to get around the edge or stunt with the DE and just be a menace to opposing QB's.

4. Safety.. Looks like M. Lewis might be nearing the end due to repeated concussions. HE is a big reason why our run defense have been as effective as it's been. Goldson has played very well this season, he could be movedd to SS allowing us to consider moving Nate to FS or targeting a FA or draft choice. Who knows about Reggie Smith, he is always hurt or Curtis Taylor. Roman should not be brought back

In a shocler the niners still have the same exact draft needs of 4 years ago minus WR.

QB not a strong class so don't' just draft a guy to be drafting a guy aka Alex Smith
OL
Pass Rush
Safety
OL, Pass Rusher, Safety, QB(Not in the 1st or 2nd round, remember Joe was 3rd round pick).
BUT WHAT WE REALLY NEED IS SHANAHAN AS HC! But that's another thread?

Do what it takes to get Berry with Carolina's 1st!

Then BPA at position of need...
OT: Williams, Bulaga
OG: Iupati
NT: Cody
RB/RS: Spiller
CB: Hayden

Use the second rounder for the next pass rusher...just too good of value there no matter how you slice it!

I expect us to hit the FA market for OT, OG and Pass rusher...maybe even S.

I want starters from our draft class...immediate impact like Crabtree...we are turning the corner no matter how many FIRE SCOTTY threads populate the Zone.

WE are soooo close!
OT... gotta relegate Snyder to a backup and resign Pashos to compete with the rookie.
OL PASSRUSHER
an ILB next to Spikes...Willis is getting old!
