Vernon Davis explains why the 49ers were able to turn things around in 2011
By Al Sacco

It's no secret that the early 2000's weren't exactly a high point in the history of the San Francisco 49ers. From 2003-2010 the once dominant franchise won just 46 games and didn't have a single winning season. Then, in 2011, something changed.
On the surface, the hiring of Jim Harbaugh seemed to make all the difference. The Niners went 13-3 in 2011 and ultimately made three NFC Championship games and a Super Bowl with him at the helm. Harbaugh left little doubt that he was an elite head coach, but the team was also full of talented players who were still hitting their stride upon his arrival. Vernon Davis was one of those players.

The San Francisco 49ers are looking to rebound from a heartbreaking Super Bowl defeat and return to the NFL's big game in the upcoming season. The road won't be easy; getting there once, much less twice in a row, is challenging.
The Kansas City Chiefs accomplished that feat, beating the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII and then, in February, the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. Their journey was an uphill battle. Kansas City won the AFC West but entered the postseason as the third seed. They had to knock off the top two seeds on their way to the Super Bowl.
The 49ers overcame adversity differently. They were the top seed in the NFC but had to mount comebacks in each of their playoff victories leading up to their clash with the Chiefs.

Vernon Davis announced his retirement from the NFL in 2020, making his first year of eligibility for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2025. While Davis played for the Denver Broncos, winning a Super Bowl there, and the Washington Commanders, he is best known for his time with the San Francisco 49ers.
Davis ranks seventh all-time among tight ends in points scored with 382 and 11th in receiving yards with 7,562. His receiving yard total falls just short of the average among the tight ends already inducted into the Hall of Fame, which is 7,656 yards.
The Hall of Fame's criteria for inductees are stringent, understandably so. Still, fans often question why certain players are overlooked for induction. For example, 49ers fans can't believe that Roger Craig has yet to
