Aldon Smith got all the glory but Cowboy did the dirty work that made Aldon's numbers look good.

I'm a huge Justin Smith fan and he clearly ate up blockers, but nobody before Aldon Smith even sniffed a quarter of his production as a pass rusher. Even if a pass rusher gets 1-on-1's, they still have to win their rep and Aldon Smith flat out obliterated OT's in 1-on-1.

Again, love Justin Smith, but Aldon Smith was a HOF level talent with or without him.
Trent Williams said he was the best pass rusher he ever played against. RIP

Agreed, I love Cowboy but Aldon was a generational talent. He would have been great either way. I really never understood the "Aldon is a Justin Smith merchant" takes.

My hope is that Raheem and Kyle find that next Aldon Smith 2.0 during Brock's prime years. As long as Brock has a all-pro DE, he'll always be in the playoffs. Now if you want Brock to win Superbowls, find him a Ronnie Lott/Deion Sanders level DB.

I agree. We win a SB with Brock and the 2019 defense.
This dude is mid AF. Undersized to play the run and hasn't done anything at all rushing the passer this year.

Yeah. Lots of hype! Didn't comment then. Not impressed yet at all.

He's been an upgrade to what we had last season. No he's not Jeffery Simmons but that why we were able to trade for him. He's getting pressures and when Nick is back will get back to dominating one on ones. And it's Javon Hargrave all over again cause our run stoppers are injured and suck so he's having to play the run more which affects him rushing the passer.

Been a little quiet recently but haven't seen any necessarily bad plays. Hope he has a huge game this week.

Also, can people start spelling his name right??....

It's ODIGHIzuwa not ODIAHzuwa...

If he turns out to be another Hargrave it won't sting as much. Hargrave was 4 years $84 million(reality-2 years $40 million).
Osa is in his 2nd year of a same sized contract but only an $11 million cap hit if he under performs this year and gets cut.

Years 3 and 4 could be keepers but if he performs well in year 3 there's the good chance he'll want a 'revision' just before that 4th(age 30) season starts. His 'motivation' seasons will be this year and next.

Prediction: 49ers will trade or release him after year 3. If the young guys get better they could do it after year 2(this spring). No need to get attached to someone who hasn't been around that long. Any 'revision' request should be nipped in the bud.

Agree, and i think one undervalued part of Osa's game is his athleticism - not so much in rushing the passer but in dropping back in zone and sniffing out middle screens. I'd like Raheem to draft another Halton and Height so Raheem can mix coverages and DLine drops from both sides of the defense.

He was brought here to provide inside pass pressure, not to stop the run. Now, with the injuries, he is having to play more and his lack of bulk shows up in run defense. If Williams can come back this week and take some of the run downs, leaving Osa to rush Darnold, we could see what we wanted from him.

That having been said, he has been getting pressure even if no sacks. Pressuring Darnold has yielded turnovers in the past. Let's see if that happens Sunday.

This is a fair assessment. They hyped him up pretty big in the off-season and TC and he hasn't really lived up to that IMO, but he's much more disruptive than anyone the 49ers at DT last year.

That is the problem - the hype was always bigger than the player. I would bet that if Lynch were to be candid about Osa's performance to date, he would say that he is doing what they brought him to do but is being limited by lack of a coordinated cast around him.

The comparison of Justin Smith and Aldon Smith works here. As long as Justin was allowed to get away with defensive holding (and maintained his physical ability to do so) Aldon was a terror. However, when Justin hurt his shoulder, Aldon's production declined noticeably.

I am increasingly optimistic about the DLine especially about Sebastian Valdez. I think Sebastian, Halton, and Osa are going to be a very tough line to run against. Add in Mykel and Nick Bosa and you have arguably one of the best DLines ShanaLynch has put together.

Add in continued improvement to Dugger and
Height and its beginning to feel a bit like the legendary Dynastic defenses of 49ers history. We shall see if this continues.
