Got damn. I need to re-watch the 49er defensive drives. Great points above about Osa needing help, and possibly wearing down over the course of a season. He's about to become a focus of offensive gameplans if he keeps it up.
ESPN says he had 4 QB hits lol. This might be another "dirty work" guy like Mykel Williams.
Game 1 in the books, on to the next.

That's what makes DLs go…Seattle thrived on "dirty work" defensive lineman

That is the key to McDonald's defense - the DL attacks the blockers and the second tier applies the pressure. It isn't a genius scheme. It just requires selfless players that are willing to do the dirty work.

Aldon Smith got all the glory but Cowboy did the dirty work that made Aldon's numbers look good.

Osa was an excellent trade.

Personally, I think the McDonald's defense - at least as far as the DLine is concerned is always looping sliding, and stunting either to stop the run or the pass. They aren't static like in the Wide 9. In those light box defenses, McDonald has his big safties to come up and stuff the run - more than the DLine having to hold ground a la a typical nose tackle in typcial 3-4.

I'm a huge Justin Smith fan and he clearly ate up blockers, but nobody before Aldon Smith even sniffed a quarter of his production as a pass rusher. Even if a pass rusher gets 1-on-1's, they still have to win their rep and Aldon Smith flat out obliterated OT's in 1-on-1.

Again, love Justin Smith, but Aldon Smith was a HOF level talent with or without him.

Osa was an excellent trade.

We didn't have a player like Osa last year and that's what probably determines the difference between the sacks and pressures between this year and last year. Also, with almost all rookie defensive linemen in the roster, Osa seems to be the perfect fit for a leader and a role model.
Osa and Evans are such enormous offseason acquisitions

Agreed, I love Cowboy but Aldon was a generational talent. He would have been great either way. I really never understood the "Aldon is a Justin Smith merchant" takes.
Yea both Joe Staley and Trent Williams have agreed that the hardest guy to block they've every blocked was one Aldon Smith
