Exactly. Aside from the Trey Lance debacle, trading Buckner was one of the dumbest moves this front office has done.
Well, not convinced. Regarding Trey Lance, a starting qb was a huge need and thanks to Covid it was not possible to scout in the usual way. It was a reasonable shot and very unlucky but not, by a mile, one of the dumbest moves ever.
Regarding Buckner, it was a money-thing, salary cap. I don't pretend to know enough to assess it.
The dumbest move the 49ers front office has ever done, imo, was to trade Charles Haley to Dallas. Neither Lance or the Buckner trade stands even a remote comparison.
Well if we're going back that far, I'm gonna go with trading Joe. Haley or not, I still think Joe would have beaten those Dallas teams that it took Steve being surrounded by a super team to beat.
Joe only played 2 seasons in KC. His last was 1994. The Niners won their last SB that season beating the Chargers so Joe wouldn't have made a difference that year.
Oh, the season that sent the team into salary cap hell in order to get Young a ring? No, he'd have still won that, also 92 & 93...
Look I love Joe but didnt he play a total of 2 quarters of ball against the Lions in the final game. He looked solid, but Young is the League MVP in 92. How do you make that switch in the playoffs?
I'm not a cap expert, but in 94 Sanders, Dent, Plummer, Mann, Cook and even Ricky Jackson were low cost contracts iirc.
