This is why I wanted nothing to do with Marte, A's gave up Luzardo a young pitcher for a 32 year old most likely rental. These guys aren't going to get traded for cheap judging by this or the A's that desperate

Players or teams don't care about adjusting to the shift. They are trying to hit home runs or balls into the gap. That's why you don't see guys make adjustments.

I used to be very against eliminating the shift because I truly believe if you are a good hitter, you learn to beat it. But a buddy asked me once why baseball is the only sport that didn't have illegal defense, and that little question in and of itself has gotten me to be ok with eliminating the shift.
great point. Also See fantasy thread dude

Would need a "free space" alley up the middle at least 20 feet wide to make a difference. I also do not like the shift, and blame it for a lot of baseball's offensive ills. When people talk about high strikeouts and low batting averages, where they look at pitchers with high spin rates and such, I think much of it is just hitters trying to hit the ball over the shift. Home runs and strikeouts are up, but hitting in general is way down....more uppercut swings, when back in the day, everyone was teaching flat swings. Take away the shift and I think players go back to flatter swings and higher batting averages. If you've ever even played rec.softball, you realize that if the defense puts a bunch of guys where you like to hit it, it's a problem....you'd probably swing for the fences, too.

I would be happy to land Max, Kimbrel and Bryant. But I don't want to give up the studs that John listed a page or so ago. Its a tough spot to be in...you know the team is 2-3 players away from actually competing for the WS, but a bad trade sets the org back a decade.
If I had to prioritize one position for this year's team to compete it would be a closer. The SP has been great, and the giants have hit fine all year, but the closer position has cost them big.
My priority list
1. Closer
2. SP
3. OF
This is why I don't like trade talks. Its too hard to guess and it ends up just being chatter.
Rarely post in here, but i agree with you. I think Kimbrel(closer) is THE need, after that so much of what is available would just be decorations.
I do not think kris bryant would be a big upgrade at LF or 1st that equals what it may take to get him. A wade/flores platoon may not be perfect, and bryant is next tier, but i would rather have wade get the playing time. vs dickerson their stats against RH are close enough to be negligible considering dicks is under performing and bryant "is back to old form."
If price is similar i would rather get starlin marte and the OF be duggar, marte, and yaz. (Lol guess not)
Max i view as a pipe dream, he wont get traded because the ownership is "dumb." The price will be way too high.
But kimbrel bumps everyone down which makes the pen stronger. You have 3 guys you are comfortable with in the 9th, and all 3 have pitched the 7th inning. So if 1-4 is due in the 7th you can put kimbrel against them.
Also of note, mcgee and kimbrel should not face the same hitters, traditional BP setup i would go rogers 7th, mcgee 8th, kimbrel 9th. But if the starter goes 7, rogers should get the 8th.

My sources within the org have told me Lazardo is a toxic presence locker in the room. That weighed into the decision to move him.

Apparently, we are also talking to the Rockies about SP Jon Gray. I'm down for that too. Would be cheaper than some of these other names.

I remember Will Clark saying for years he was in Belt's ear about adjusting his approach to go the other way and beat that wide open hole on the left side of the IF, but Belt wouldn't listen. He said "I talked to that kid about changing his approach all the time, but he didn't want to, so I finally gave up."
To be fair to Belt, not everyone has Clark's natural ability to adjust like that and put the ball where they want. Maybe Clark doesn't understand that most guys cant abandon their entire approach and just start hitting it wherever they see an opening.

Teams also don't value batting average much anymore.
We talked about this before... .230~ is average league wide.
You have guys like Eugenio Suarez hitting below .190 and still getting regular ABs

No doubt Clark could have pushed balls to third. But losing singles up the middle is different

As he should, you gotta see if someone like Colorado will take prospects you don't mind dealing while Chicago would prefer guys you don't want to deal. Never know
