You have to look at the other moves that have been made and not made since that trade. Specifically not hanging on to or rebuilding th bullpen. They knew they would be without their best reliever since he injured his arm last season. They did nothing. The let one of their best relievers leave. No legitimate closer. I could go on but we all know the problems.
Which leads me to believe into the only other obvious solution. Running into the solid budget spending wall, making the best he could patching the back end of the pitching and hope what he had there and in bullpen in addition to solid Webb and Ray will be prevailed by the better offense. It simply spectacularly backfired. I am actually much more interested to see how they'll go forward in lieu of major untradable contracts other than maybe Lee, and I absolutely know the ownership group's stance (money out, money in up to the budget line) will not change one iota.
the reality it's two different skill sets. this is where ppl have a challenge as fans, because buster is such a franchise legend and stand up guy. but that's why this went south. the reality is he didn't get the job due to front office acumen. he got the job for what he did between the lines. this ain't the same job. i think derek jeter was involved with the marlins he didn't exactly make them the yankees. it's kinda boring but a lot of the best gms are guys you never heard of. posey didn't do the best he could. that's why he goes around looking like his dog died per reports. he knows he effed up. all those bad contract you mention, posey inked them. he didn't inherit them. except for lee he did all the signings that fans don't like. lee's one of the few guys doing well, and posey didn't get him.
We can speculate about budget restrictions but the Giants still spend a lot. They rank ahead of a lot of teams that are playing better than they are. There are also a few teams that spend more but are struggling. The Mets are #2 and they're having a terrible year. The ability to spot young talent and then develop it is more important than how much you spend. The Giants have suffered in that are for years. They've had some success but not enough to be consistent contenders. They had a nice 5 year run when they won 3 WS because they relly nailed it with the pitching staff. Both starting and relieving.
