He had 18 errors in 100 games last year. He can't play on the majors if he fields like that. He needs to cut that number in half. People forget how many runs and extra bases a good first baseman can save. Scoopng up low throws. Stopping liners down the right fileld line. Going into the hole and turning to throw to the pitcher. For years Brandon Belt was one of the best fielding 1st basemen in the league. Wade and Flores are both pretty good fielders.
They can't be in too big of a hurry to get him to the majors. We all have high hopes for him but they don't want to mess him up like they did with Luciano. It won't hurt him to spend at least half the season in AAA. If he shows his fielding is improved then they can trade Wade if the move him up and keep Flores as a utility man or backup or DH.
We didnt "mess up" Luciano. The jury is still out on him. Good players figure it out regardless if they have to go up and down to the minors a couple of times.
I dont expect to compete, so I dont care if Bryce isnt a star defender right now. If he has a great Spring Training, put him on the roster. Its not like we should be competing for a title this year anyway.
Luciano struggled at short and then t second. It took them 5 seasons tofigure out he can't plat the infield. He hit .211 with no HRs in SF and only .250 with 10 HRs in Sac. His hitting suffered because they shuffled him up and down and sat him on the bench for days at a time. I don't think that's the way to develop what once was theier #1 prospect.
I would rather see Eldridge plying everyday at frst for the entire seson If part of it is at AAA I'm okay with that. If they're willing to let him learn 1st base at the major league level then that's okay too but I don't want them to bench him or start moving him up and down like they did Marco.
Luciano killed it for a month (albeit no homeruns), and then was inexplicably sent down. He didnt have much success in the Majors after that (got hurt, then came back and had a brutal september).
I agree with you, having him sit for days at a time is no way to develop their #1 prospect. He should have been playing every single day, as we were a 4th place team going no where. We lost nothing by putting him on the lineup card every day.
Same for Eldridge. If he has a great Spring, he should be up and playing regularly. I also agree with you that he shouldnt be bouncing up and down from AAA to the Majors. The problem is we need to be ok with a slump at the MLB level and not send him down at the first sign of struggling.
