That's actually not a travel. You don't start counting the steps until he's gathered the ball, which is when his left hand touches it. Then you count the first step after that. He shuffles his feet prior to gather, but that's legal.

Wait, what? So you're saying a player is allowed to shuffle his feet and take 5 steps from the time the ball leaves his left hand to the time it touches his right hand? I know the rule you're referring to, but I don't think it applies with his shuffled steps in the beginning.

I think he still took 3+ steps after he gathered the ball again.

this. wtf? why doesn't everybody just run up the floor with the ball while shuffling their feet then?

Per the rulebook…

"A player who receives the ball while he is progressing or upon completion of a dribble, may take two steps in coming to a stop, passing or shooting the ball."…."The first step occurs when a foot, or both feet, touch the floor after gaining control of the ball."

The bolded is the key part. Usually, "control" is defined by when you touch the ball with that second hand. You could argue that Brewer establishes control when he puts his hand under the ball, making it a 3-step travel, but that would be a very unusual interpretation of the rule. (although technically correct)

Watch the video again, and see how many steps he takes after his left hand touches the ball. As the rules state, the first step occurs when his foot touches after he gains control (left hand gather). He steps with his right foot, then jumps off of the left.

They actually do. It should take an NBA PG 3-4 dribbles to get from one end of the court to the other, and it takes a lot more than 6-8 steps to do that. It's called a speed dribble. Guys like John Wall & Derrick Rose are great at it. The shuffle step makes the Brewer play look weird, but you can take as many steps as you want while you're dribbling.

You ever play 2k and hit the turbo button while you're about to dribble? The player pushes the ball in front of him and catches up to it. That's a speed dribble. And you're usually taking 3-4 steps in between dribbles (in real life) when you're on a dead run.

lol...Reggie is my favorite player from the 90s but when ppl make these kind of absurd statements - they lose all credibility on the topic. All he did was showed his bias towards the player from his generation.

Of course, I think Jordan is a better player - but the gap between the two is smaller than most ppl think. Reggie gotta stick with his 90s (watered-down expansion era) nemesis.
