If the Lakers don't have Kobe, do you think they have a shot at Melo or LeBron?

Durant won't be a FA until after Kobe's extension is up.

I think they would've had a better shot, since it would've been THEIR team and they wouldn't need to worry about their egos getting bruised, especially Melo. I don't think Lebron would've came here because he still wants to win championships. But look at Melo, if he was really that worried about winning a ring, he wouldn't have resigned back with the Knicks. Didn't he have offers from Rockets and Bulls? That should've been a no-brainer for him. He wanted his own team, the money, and being the main star in that city, what lot of top NBA players want.

On top of that, I think if we really don't have a solid roster in place by the time Kobe retires, it will still be hard to get a top FA that year. Why would a Durant, Griffin, Anthony Davis want to leave their team / city where they are the face, to come to place where you will be compared to Kobe and criticized when they miss a game winner, or do poor in the 4th, or don't win a ship, especially if there isn't a good roster set in place. We will romanticize about Kobe when he's gone, like we do about Jordan. We're gonna pretend like Kobe made every game winning shot and was always clutch and won every playoff game, you know the media will...it's gonna be a tough sell.

Like Ninerjohn said, it's gonna be tough until the Kobe era is over, and our best bet is probably to build through the draft and produce the next great Laker instead of trying to buy one.

Lol..Poor things!!! The Horror!!!! Being the face of the city when you're compared to all time greats, criticized if they miss big shots?! That must be terrible, they should go to the Bucks for sure!!! AHHHHH!!!!! Who are you a fan of, just curious?

Kray, you seem bitter though. Perhaps you should become a Warriors fan and root for a winner this year. Or the Clippers. The Lakers time has come and passed. No more Shaq or Kareem deals. No more ripping off other teams to get Magic and Worthy in the draft. No more young Kobe. Its going to be a long time before this organization is competitive again I think.

If you mean 8th seed or so, then 2016-17 is possible for sure. But to be an elite top 4 team in the West? I would think it would take longer than that. RIght now the Lakers will have Randle and a lot of uncertainty.

You seem to forget that this is exactly what it was like after magic left and after shaq left. Only thing different is the superstar stayed this time and the rest of the team left. They're starting over. It's what they do. Sure they changed the rules to basically stop the Lakers from doing this every 5 years, but there is still the allure of being a Los Angeles Laker. It doesn't mean much to you fans that hate the Lakers, but to hardcore ballers it does. Superstars are still going to come to LA. They aren't just going to fall into mediocrity for the rest of the franchise's life. lol

One big person is missing though... Jerry Buss. Im not sure either of his kids have the pull to get it done.

Heard Jennie talking about how she and her brother talked about it and she gave him 3 years to turn them into a contender. She didn't go so far as to say she was taking control if they weren't a contender after that time, but she alluded to it. And in the mean time Mitch is still the GM, and we have to give him some slack since he built a back to back champion when nobody thought they were anywhere near being a contender.

I'm talking Top 4 team in the West. They're going to have a stud on a rookie contract and about $60M of cap space, with 2 years to fill it. Over the next two years, there are a lot of high quality, unrestricted FAs. Nailing this draft pick was always the key, and it looks like they did.

I think he was still working for the Suns these last 3 years.

The Harbaugh stuff brought down the Niners? Please. The only thing hurting the Niners right now are major injuries and suspensions to their best defensive players. The only thing bringing down the Lakers right now is paying Kobe a stupid contact and bad front office decisions.

Whoever is leaking stuff in the Niners front office is going to cause more problems down the line.

Keeping Kobe, even at the "Thank you" contract price is something that Jerry Buss wanted done. Most non-fans like you just wouldn't understand. Even the Niners treat their legends like dirt....toss them in the dust heap when they are used up. That you get Montana finishing in a Chefs jersey and Rice last playing ofr the Seahawks. The Lakers just wouldn't allow that with Kobe.

The Niners would have one less SB win if they had kept Montana and let Young go. That was a no brainer move. Maybe the Lakers are happy with the contract they gave Kobe and taking care of their own. Personally, I think they gave him TONS of money over the years and would have been smart to not overpay him and basically make it a given that they wont be competitive.

The Niners had the luxury of Young waiting in the wings. The same doesn't apply for the Lakers. I would say this though....Montana was healthy enough to play well in the second half of the last game in the 1992 season. If he had regained the starting role in the playoffs, we would have beaten the Cowboys at the Stick and we would have beaten the Bills in the Superbowl as well.

There's no clear heir apparent to Kobe. Maybe he's going to pass the torch to Randle? All he's got is a young team of scrappers and a date with the recordbooks. A lot of us are invested in seeing him reach those marks....just as we were invested in seeing Rice break some crazy records in his time. Beyond that, I don't see the Niners trying to tank....they got their first rounder back in the Lin trade, so they aren't overly concerned with losing their pick to PHX. They have some talented pieces and will win some games and surprise a few teams.

I feel bad for saying this but Hallelujah!!!!! I am glad this happened before the season started.
Is their anyway the Lakers could get the money back they're paying him this year?

I don't think so. Are you talking about cap space or the actual money they are paying him.

They'd get a disabled player exception in the amount of $4.85M for Nash, that they could use to sign anyone for that amount, or they could trade that exception for a player in the last year of their deal that makes that amount or less.

I thought you couldn't trade the DPE?

The Pacers could also trade for a player in the final year of his contract, with similar limitations. However, Indiana could acquire a player making up to $5.4 million next season under the CBA's rules. The Pacers could also claim a player off waivers in the final year of his deal at $5.4 million.
