2014 Sochi Winter Olympics thread

What are we fighting about in here. SMH.

In terms of medal standings (since gold != silver != bronze) the final standings are

1) Russia
2) Norway
3) Canada

In terms of overall medals

1) Russia
2) USA
3) Norway (I think).

No one is denying that America does very very well in all international sports.

USA is still consistently Top 3-5 but this disappointing Olympics showing hopefully teaches the media a lesson. Focus on nothing but negativity heading into the games and the athletes catch the fever.

you have to understand where we were coming from. we were the only country to host an olympics and not win a gold medal at those games and we did it twice 1976 montreal and 1988 calgary. so in 2010 to have 4 more gold than any other country in addition to getting the 2 hockey golds it was seen as a win. i did say a few more medals without actually looking it up, i didnt realize it was 11. as far as the summer olympics, we have 35 million people in a colder climate country, we're not going to be powers there, especially when compared to a country who has 10 times the population. but occasionally we steal the show like when donovan bailey broke the 100m world record in that lovely country of yours

No question but given the USA's size, population, resources, multi-racial, and financial commitment, something is off. I tend to think it's the media and USA lifestyle softens a lot of these athletes. Asians are on the rise, their improvement in Winter Sports is impressive.

Yeah, canada sure did "steal the show" with that race, securing 1 of their 3 golds in that olympics.

Actually, in the last Olympics, the USA won 86 more medals and 45 more golds than Canada.

I'm not defending the Dutch coach's argument. I'm saying that we don't give a rat's ass about most of these sports and we still completely dwarf every other country on the planet in medals, gold or otherwise. That means we've won more than often than anyone else has, Captain Analogy.

Yeah, canada sure did "steal the show" with that race, securing 1 of their 3 golds in that olympics.

Of course we didn't steal the show. World's fastest man was always winner of 100 meters. Donovan wins and all of a sudden Michael Johnson is worlds fastest cause his 200 m time was quicker than twice Donovan's 100. So logically to Americans he was the fastest. Forgetting that 200 time was always that way for obvious reasons.

So we had the race off. Was over in first 30 meters so Johnson does the honorable thing and pulls up with a hamstring injury.
