Privately, owners saying union left impression they would accept 50-50 if system issues were resolved, and that's why NBA returned to talks.

jeez they haven't even settled the bri split. Everythign else seems miniscule relative to that.

I understand why the players don't want stringent luxury tax restrictions or age limits, but those should be secondary issues.

Heard some bad news today.

Apparently the league said that they were prepared to make a financial move before the last collective bargaining session, which is what led to all the optimism. Well, apparently their "financial move" was this:

1) 50/50 and the owners get everything they want on system issues. (de facto hard cap)
2) 47/53 in favor of the owners and the players win some concessions, basically meaning that there's a more punitive luxury tax, but not completely prohibitive for luxury tax playing teams.

If that's true, the sides aren't all that close, IMO.

The Players should just take option 1. The BRI split is more important than anythign else.

Deal with the hard cap.

I don't know. If I was making millions of dollars, I'd probably be okay with taking a little less money in exchange for the freedom to play where I want to. From what I understand, the players are more flexible on the BRI (heck, they've already dropped 5 points), but the system is more important to them.

Upon hearing this news, I think the owners' end game is to wait to see how the players react to missing checks, which starts happening on 11/15. If the players hold firm after that, we might see some movement on the owner's side.

But the current luxury tax system is already a huge deterrent to most teams from spending money.

Taking the next step to a hard cap, how much more of an effect will that have on player salaries?

And I don't think a hard cap will literally ever happen. It will probably just be a more stringent luxury tax.

Honestly, this entire lockout was preordained. The players were destined to lose. They had no chance of winning.

That Woj piece is horsecrap. He's good sometimes, but his work is trashy way too often.

The more days this lockout goes on it just gets closer to the day when the Kings win the championship...
