Devil's Advocate Time

If, and I mean if hell freezes over and a white guy wins a dunk contest in the NBA, England loses, is that a good thing for the US or is it bad?

Pro:
- England basically eliminated
- Only have to beat Algeria to advance

Con:
- Gives confidence to Algeria to advance
- Home-field advantage to Algeria

Thoughts?

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

The BEST case scenerio for USA is for this game to end 0-0, and then

Slovenia 4pts, +1GD (1st tie breaker), 3 GS (2nd tie breaker)
USA 2pts, 0GD, 3GS
England 2pts, 0GD, 1GS
Algeria, 1pt, -1GD, 0GS

if that were too happen, just a 1-0 win over Algeria would get USA into the 2nd round. They would have 5pts, +1, 4GS at worst, and no scenario in the England/Slovenia would keep them from advancing.

The US can advance even with a tie. They will have to root for England to either lose or tie with the same amount (or with 1 more) of goals.

Example: US 0-0 Algeria

They're in if: England 0-0 or 1-1 Slovenia. If it's 2-2, US is out due to number of goals suffered.

i still don't get it. in that scenerio both england and the us have 3 goals for and 3 goals against.

England 2 - 2 Slovenia

USA 0 -0 Algeria

This results in lots being drawn to decide who joins Slovenia in knock-out stage

You're right, I was wrong. Of US 0-0 and England 2-2, then they will probably flip a coin to decide who advances.

It would be awful, of course.

"Nice to see your home fans booing you"

-Wayne Rooney talking to the camera as he left the field.

If I'd paid serious £££s to watch that rubbish I'd have every right to boo, Rooney was terrible (again!). England looked mentally beaten before half time.

I completely agree. Algeria were far and away the better, more dangerous team today. Everybody on England seemed to be looking around waiting for somebody else to provide the spark. Still in it though, you control your own destiny just like everybody else in the group.
Oh dear lord that was abject, pathetic and horrible to watch...sorry you had to sit through that.

Dreadful.

For too long I tried to understand what happens with the England squad, which has the talent but for some reason can't play at a high level. I gave up. Have no idea what the reson is.

clueless tonight and why we brought on Wright-Phillips instead of Joe Cole I just don't know.

Gerrard's absolutely wasted on the left, Heskey is a one trick carthorse, Lampard goes missing for long periods, Johnson and Carragher are accidents waiting to happen, Lennon and Wright-Phillips are out of their depth at international level, Rooney ? Well, if you can tell me what happened to him tonight, I'd love to hear it.

Dreadful and Joe Cole sits on the bench.

Sorry but England deserved to be boo'ed tonight.
serbia beating germany f**ked me over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yo, where the f**k is that f****t ref from? we need to bomb on this hating ass f****t's city.

awww helll nah

like I said, bomb first then invade his village
As mad as I am about the terrible call, it was the US's fault for not sealing the deal. The game is 90 minutes, not 53 or 45 minutes....Can't let up on an Algeria team who's not only on home field, but now has the confidence to show that they can match up with good talent.

What we need to do is not only bring our talent to them, but keep it organized like we did the second half against Slovenia, b/c if we play like that, Algeria will have no shot whatsoever, but if we come out flat again, Algeria will most likely beat us (tie counts as a loss to me for wednesdays game) due to their confidence level.

I'm just hoping the desperation of needing to win will carry them to play at a respectable level.

They just need to get the W and they are in no matter what.

Just Win Baby

I know that's all we need, but after the England-Algeria match, just a little nervous about which US team shows up...

The U.S. will smack on Algeria. I'm more confident in this than the Niners making the 2010 Playoffs.
