There are three guys that I seriously considered instead of Elmore Smith, and all of them are still available. I hope at least one falls to me for the next pick.

I'm taking Maurice Stokes. What a depressing story.

http://espn.go.com/classic/biography/s/stokes_maurice.html

NBA Rookie of the Year in 1955-1956.
2nd team All-NBA for all 3 years in league.
Permanently paralyzed after hitting his head in his last game at the end of the 1957-1958 season.

Quote:

Stokes made an immediate impact, getting 32 points, 20 rebounds and eight assists in his NBA debut. He went on to average 16.8 points in 1955-56 and a league-best 16.3 rebounds, snatching a franchise-record 38 in one game, and was voted the NBA's Rookie of the Year

Quote:
"The first great, athletic power forward," Bob Cousy said years later. "He was Karl Malone with more finesse."

Quote:
"Maurice Stokes was a moose of a man, the first star the franchise had. At six feet seven and 250 pounds, he was stronger and a better shooter than Elgin Baylor."
--Oscar Robertson

I almost picked him.
I KNEW IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn It Man!!!!!!!!!!!! That WAS my pick
I think this guy was on his way to being a borderline HOFer until hitting the bottle became more important to him than hitting the hardwood, but for his first 5 years in the league he was one of the best young PFs in the game - a 4-time All-Star and a two time All-NBA selection (one 2nd, one 3rd)

Mr Vin Baker

Nice pick. I had him on my radar on the way back.
If Scottie Pippen is the Yin, then Anthony Mason is defenitly the Yang.

A muscular version, but a very good playmaker and facilitator, and a total enforcer

He was one of the NY Knicks most rugged players from the 90's, and once traded to Charlotte, blossemed into an all around player earning an All NBA nod and all star game. That year averaged 53% shooting 75% FT 16.7 PPG, 11.3 RPB, 5.7 APG, 1 SPG, 1 BPG....I shall use that year off the bench

And just as I say that, Vin Baker & Anthony Mason go off of the board. Great picks, guys. Baker was a superb offensive player & rebounder, while Mason was excellent on both ends of the court, and was an incredible passer. He once averaged 5.7apg, which is amazing for a PF.
