Thornton trade may be coming

Joe Thornton | Sharks

These playoffs have been full of trade buzz about Joe Thornton, who has failed to energize the San Jose Sharks and the team's now on the brink of elimination.

He has a minus-10 rating, which is "downright embarrassing," Sportsnet's Mike Brophy writes, and if the Sharks want to make big changes to this underachieving group, a Thornton trade would be the biggest of them all -- money-wise, talent-wise and symbolically.

He could potentially end up with the Calgary Flames, who are seeking a center to play alongside Jarome Iginla, CBC's Elliotte Friedman previously wrote. And surely a handful of other teams would take a flier on the former Hart Trophy winner.

A no-trade clause may keep him in San Jose, but Thornton might want a change of scenery, as well.

Unlike Boston, all we've done is put pieces around Thornton to succeed. The word ungrateful comes up very fast if Thornton wants a change of scenery.

What we need to do is resign Marleau and Heatley, then package them both plus thornton and Nabby to the penguins for Sydney Crosby. Championship!

Trading Thornton would be an immediate ticket to Suckdom. Thornton wasn't the guy missing his defensive assignments out there in the playoffs. Joe played hard -- It was more the players around him sucking it up. Any other year, I might blame Thornton, but you could clearly see the difference in play and effort between him versus Heatley this playoff.

We improve defensively, we win the Stanley Cup. Simple as that. But it'd be incredibly difficult.

let nabokov walk which frees up money, let blake walk or even sign him if he takes a cheap contract, resign marleau and build up our defense. i'll be content with a veteran at goalie with greiss or even stalock if he has a great preseason fighting for the spot as long as our d is really good
I say keep everyone except nabby! And sign a legit D man

Exactly. I love Nabokov to death, as he's saves our lives so many times in so many games with many acrobatic saves. But we just can't keep everybody, and the fact is, even I -- a big fan -- can admit he let in some goals just too easy on the big stage.

The key to winning that cup in San Jose is Defense. The Niedermeyer's and Lidstrom's and Prongers of the NHL prove that. With the offense we have, a top-level defense would catapult us into the cup almost certainly.

We're there offensively, but not defensively. I hope we build on that and get to the Cup next year. But I am still sorely disappointed and dejected from what we've suffered yet again.

Doug Wilson on KNBR with Ralph & Tom yesterday. He played the interview close to the vest, but the theme was to build on what they learned and try to get over the hump by working just a little harder. Yesterday was the first time I heard him say that Heatly was actually playing with a torn groin . . . ouch!

haha i doubt Pitt would ever go through with that deal. Crosby is the face of the nhl and has an international fan base, and he sells a ton of merchandise.

Yeah, it's virtually impossible. I don't know why he was even out there. I attempted to play softball with a torn groin and couldn't do much more than waddle. And this was quite recent. Tore it in October before halloween. Took 4 months to fully recover in time to play in the Spring beginning in March.

But it's really not that bad if you keep yourself in good shape and stretch properly as much as you should. I did, and didn't miss a game for the Spring season. Still the fastest player in the league as well.
i havent watched anything that have to do with hockey since sunday. damn im so sad and upset and still cant believe its over. really thought this was gonna be the yr, every yr i wonder if this team is ever gonna get it done so much freaking talent and yet they cant pull it off. this team is so frustrating more so than the 9ers and giants because they have the talent and can win a championship every yr but they come up short and just break your heart.

im eager to see what dw has in stored this offseason, DEFENSE!! DEFENSE!!! DEFENSE!!!!

Yes, please. We all at least know that with our Niners and Giants, expecting a Super Bowl or World Series is a little bit much, but it's NEVER "too much" to expect and set the standard of Stanley Cup for the Sharks. They unquestionably have the talent to do so. Sometimes a little luck can help -- or hurt -- you, and we seem to suffer on the bad end a lot, but overall we still just haven't done what it takes to get there.

We can, but we haven't. Everyone in the world knows what we still need: defense.

take it for what its worth - eklund

"Talking to a source who confirmed the Sharks may make a MAJOR play for Kovalchuk should the money be opened up. There are also rumors of the Sabres and Sharks talking deal. "

wonder how we pay a goalie then...
