Sign Bobby Abreu and have him show John Bowker what plate discipline is all about. I am not saying that Bowker could ever become the hitter that Abreu has been. I do think it could help him learn however.
Can Abreu play a decent RF?
I would rather get a much younger Jonny Gomes RF, who has power
Two problems with that. First of all it isnt a given that Gomes will even be on the market. If the Reds offer him arbitration he has already said he would accept. They may not because they see Gomes, like all the teams basically do, as a platoon player.
Secondly, he has only played every day for 1/2 a season in 2005. I am not so sure I am going to invest big money for a guy who simply hasnt proven it over an entire year.
Not sure it would require big money to get Gomes if/when he becomes a free agent. I see him as a Uribe kinda guy...proven to a certain extent and has put up good numbers, but not exactly a top-tier or expensive talent. Gomes wouldn't be the ONLY signing of the off-season (more complimentary), but you hope you catch lightning in a bottle (like Uribe) and see him turn into a productive starter/rotation guy.
~Potential free agent signing: Abreu, Gomes, Adam LaRoche (none are bank-breakers, but all are improvements)
~Abreu could start in RF, Bowker (LH power)/Gomes (RH power) platoon in LF, LaRoche at 1st, Panda at 3rd
Velez - 2nd
Uribe/Renteria - SS
Sandoval - 3rd
Abreu - RF
Gomes/Bowker - LF
LaRoche/Garko - 1st
Posey - C
Rowand - CF
