2009 Oakland A's thread

I agree. I also heard that Devine might be having tommy john surgery.
Not yet Murphy's Law but getting close to that in terms of the health of this team.
A's/ Angels is on ESPN opening day!!! 8:05 start CT
Braden vs Saunders

...certainly not the starting pitchers' duo both teams thought they'd have on opening day.

I think we can win this one... I hope I am right!

Opening Day at a normal time is so much better than being awake at 4am watching the A's lose by one in Japan....

Cahill already getting roasted by a horrid Giants lineup. Imagine what the Angels are gonna do to him
once again i am not i pressed with what i see out of cahill today. How he has been ranked an elite prospect I don't know. THe guy throws 88-90 and can't locate it in the strike zone.
Cahill is a sinker baller specialist.

You look at some of the top sinker ballers in the bigs with a Webb, Lowe, Wang, Cook, and others...doesn't matter how fast you throw really to succeed as a sinker baller in the bigs, it's getting the ball down with that heavy sinker and as Fosse pointed out on the broadcast, when Cahill was getting hard hit tonight and in ST, it's when the balls is up.

I'd take a 89-91 MPH fastball with some movement as Cahill seems to have along with that heavy sinker that he still needs to work on. Curveball, threw it a few times, could be a solid pitch but certainly not the big looper we all read about his first 1.5 years in the minors in 06 and 07.

Now the control didn't help and that's been the issue with Cahill in the minors especially after he made the jump from A+ to AA. That's what most think will separate him from being a 2/3 to a 3/4 caliber arm.

Remember, he's still only 21 and there's a reason why so many A's fans wanted to see Cahill start the year in the minors, to work on his control.
Some scary stats I saw on TV tonight.

A's rotation will have four LHs with Eveland, Braden, Outman, and Anderson...last time that happened was I believe in 04 when they had Mulder, Zito, Lilly and I believe Redman with Huddy being the only RH to start that season in the rotation...this season it'll be Cahill who is a rookie.

Also the A's opening day rotation will have like a combined 60 or so MLB starts.
Wonder how the poor outings by Cahill and Gio will effect their role at the start of the season.

I'd still personally would rather have Gallagher in the rotation over both Cahill and Outman.
