Thing that bugs me a little is that we reworked Dahls deal this off season, only to cut him and take a slightly bigger cap hit. Then you look, and we signed Cook, who never took a snap for us, granted it's 700,000 hit, but then you throw in the 2.5 million dollar hit on Dockett who never took a snap either ( reg. season). I understand potentially taking risks here and there, but that was some stupid money blown on Dockett.
We're still paying Carlos Rodgers . Haha. Ok so does that dead money go away in the offseason? Cause $40 million would be nice. I can see Vernon and Boone both leaving maybe boldin and maybe bethea. That should be closer to $50 mil

Bethea is signed through 2017. Boldin either retires or re-signs IMO.

Right now around $41-$44 million depending on cap limit in cap space for 2016.
Thanks AB. I really don't like to go after free agents and have really appreciated Baalke not overspending but we need some players straight up and we're going to have to pay them.

I have never been a big one for building through free agency, but if Baalke can't get certain picks right, he needs to spend some money, so far the only FA who looks worth the money is Smith.

Wright was a bust signing, and I said that back in March, gave him too much. Bush I was iffy on due to injury issues, Dockett seemed great, but was cut, wasted $2.5M on him for zero reg season snaps. Bellore was good but not spectactular yet anyway.
At what point this season would it become clear to potentially sell (trade) off some players like the Bears did a week ago? I mean if we lose like 3-4 more games in a row, making the playoffs would basically be gone, and at that point it's better to be really bad (better draft pick) than it is to win (in a sense) meaningless games, only to get a worse draft pick, and STILL not be in the playoffs? I know trades are some what rare during the season, but perhaps someone like Vernon Davis or others on walk years might have a little more value in a trade, than what we might get in 2017 as compensatory picks. I mention Davis, because moving him might save some money for this year, but it would open a starting spot for someone like Celek to potentially shine, or Bell, or McDonald.

If we're out of it, I'm down for an extreme youth movement, and acquiring what ever we can as far as draft picks for players not thought of to be here for the long haul.
We have to resign Boone. I would have said let him walk up until now...we are so talent and leader deprived that we have to retain some guys...he is going to get paid and it is going to piss off Staley though.
Totally agree about resigning Boone. Would like to see us try to keep Ian Williams as well, but I think he is a little redundant with Dial/Dorsey. I'd let the rest of our FA's walk, and consider cutting Brooks. With the amount of talent that walked out of the door this year, I do think we need to invest in FA to fill a few key holes. Here are the positions I would target:

  • Right Tackle – We have a gaping hole here, and you often need to invest a 1st rounder to fill the position. Don't want to be pigeon holed into that, so we should look to pick up a guy like Andre Smith or Cordy Glenn who could be plugged in right away. I'd even consider a vet like Jake Long to help bridge the gap until they can find a long-term replacement.
  • OLB/Pass Rusher – Again, it's a hard position to fill, and we need an instant impact guy. The top of the draft doesn't have a lot of great options either. Von Miller probably isn't realistic, but a guy like Bruce Irvin could make a big difference.
  • Wide Receiver – Another position that Balke hasn't successfully drafted, and Boldin seems to be on his last legs. Kaepernick has shown he needs reliable veteran receivers with big catching radius's, so FA would make sense. Alshon Jeffrey would be a perfect fit, but there are some other options out there like Brian Quick or Mohamed Sanu.

With potentially 40 million to spend, we should be able to fill these positions, with some money left over to see if they can find value at the Tight End, Guard, Running Back, ILB, and Cornerback positions. Assuming we continue to see development from our young DLine, interior OLine and Secondary, this would put us into a good position entering the draft to take BPA.

With the kind of money you are projecting, I think it's time for Baalke to do it big in free agency. Not necessarily any record breaking deals. But I definitely would make a run at Alex Mack and one of the better tackles available. Get the O-line fixed and we could at least have a middle of the pack offense. Regardless of where anyone stands on the situation with our QB, no one can argue that the right side of our O-line needs to go (Devey, Pears) or be benched (Marcus Martin). And we absolutely need to extend Alex Boone. I look at him as having two players in one because of his ability to play so many positions well on the O-line.

Those moves alone in my opinion would allow us to focus on getting some help at DE and OLB early in the 2016 draft. After that, we can address QB. I do not foresee any big time contracts doled out to any of our 2013 draft picks, so we should be in good shape to fix the O-line in free agency.

I also think that it's time to stop bargain shopping for free agents. Let our young guys play. I've seen enough from many of them where they should be able to compete for significant playing time without some vet in front of them. I think Baalke has more hits than misses overall with his bargain shopping, but his 2015 has been horrible with his low profile free agents.

What do you think?

I forgot about TE and WR. I am actually ok with what we have at receiver, though we probably need a reliable veteran in the mix. It wouldn't hurt to try and get an Alshon Jeffrey or Mohammed Sanu. I would also see what the Colts plan is with Coby Fleener.

So that means extend Boone (#1), make a run at Alex Mack (#2), and go after maybe a 2nd tier right tackle. He doesn't have to be elite, but just someone that won't be in the bottom 10 of eligible tackles in the league. I'd take a right tackle that can be consistently average at this point. That would leave only the RG spot to fill which Marcus Martin, Daniel Kilgore, and Brandon Thomas can battle it out for. t can't count on Anthony Davis coming back, and even if he did, what do you think he does if he gets another concussion? With that said, it would leave us with a decent O-line and we could really see what we have in our QBs. I am a Kap supporter, but I'd give Blaine Gabbert and a rookie QB (I'm hoping we draft one in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th round) some snaps with the first team offense during preseason.

Basically focus on the offense in free agency and take care of the defense in the draft. However with some 12 draft picks (am I correct?), we can address OLB, DE, S, QB, RB, and many other positions.
How much cap space are we looking at having if we keep Kap and if we cut him?
