Updated the NinersNation pages, now at $13.356M under for 2015, but I have articles on NN talking about why the cap room is deceiving.

Hey AB, I was wondering what Carriers trade means for the cap?

I think they should look at changing some of the rules regarding dead money in the next CBA.
If this is correct: http://overthecap.com/salary-cap/san-francisco-49ers/ that's a lot of wasted cap space on retirements and discipline based cuts.
Ray McDonald $4,609,971
Anthony Davis $3,366,670
Justin Smith $2,186,668
Aldon Smith $1,600,000
With the potential to now release Brooks too to add to that list. The NFLPA should push for dead money being discounted if a player is cut following an arrest or something, more money to go around for the players that can stay out of trouble, and removes one of the biggest downsides for a team to release a player in that situation.

Not much, like $25K due to top 51 rule. but in 2016 and 2017 is when we save more, 2017 his full cap figure.
But we are off the hook for his $585K base salary, and potential $250K(I believe) escalator in 2016.

Would be nice, not sure it will happen though, and the next CBA won't be done till 2020 or 2021, so we have a while till then.

So is this true?
Matt Maiocco @MaioccoCSN Sep 10
With 69 players under contract (including six on reserve lists and 10 practice-squaders), the #49ers are $16.3M under salary cap, per NFLPA.

No, I have us at $11.5M, the NFLPA report is still using Top 51 rules right now.

With Aldon gone, I don't see us having any cap issues for quite some time (not having to worry about his cap figure if he's extended). The Class of 2013 will be eligible for extensions when the season is up, but no one that should command any significant money and the only real priority is Eric Reid. The Class of 2012 is all gone. Not a bad spot to be in, especially if the team can remain competitive.

With rollover and such, I wonder if the Niners look at this as a year to "build chemistry" and will make some splashes next year... thoughts?

I just don't see Baalke making a big splash in FA. I know I am a blind homer, but I just don't see the need to overspend at any position in free agency. I really like the Niner's cap and roster position moving forward.
I'm sure we will extend some of our younger guys (Reid, although I would assume he would have his 5th year option picked up), and pick up some cheaper vets to fill any needs we have after the season.

I don't see it either. It's just not his style. I think going after Torrey Smith is about as big of a splash as you will see Trent Baalke make. And I mentioned this before (though I could be wrong), because of the bust of the 2012 draft, we probably don't have too many guys to extend. The 2013 guys can begin renegotiating, but they can all be had back for decent deals, unless someone seriously breaks out this season.

still, we're sitting pretty comfortable
I expect Baalke will start locking up guys like Wilhoite and Ian Williams soon... maybe Boone, but less likely
curious to see if he starts extending Reid, Dial, Carradine this upcoming off-season

After watching the game today I'm wondering how we're not 40 mil under the cap. We need more impact players and we lost a bunch so where's all the money to gamer new ones?
