Tear that band-aid off and do better moving forward. Rebuild the roster while dealing with the painful cap fall out of earlier bad decisions. In 2025 we should be drafting guys who will be a part of our core and whom we will want to re-sign in 3 or 4 years. At the same time, we need to be pro-active in determining who should be paid by us and who should be paid by someone else and trade the latter for more draft capital. It feeds into itself if you consistently draft well.

Our owner just bought a soccer team, doubt they are allowing our F/O to spend much this off season.
How would that affect spending ?

Depends on what was spent on said soccer team.

Oh, so the soccer team counts towards our salary cap? Do tell us more.

It comes down to cash on hand and a desire to part with assets.

If you already own a home, you're probably not going to repair the home you have at the same time while you're purchasing another one. Jed is talking about reigning in spending right after buying the soccer team. It's really not rocket science.

$65 Million?! Geez that's some piss poor decisions; I can see why the Yorks is pissed. That much and no SB to show for it.

And remember it was cheaper to keep AA over Buckner...

That's 25 million we'll be paying him to not be here over last season and this.

Buckner doesn't win us a Super Bowl

I saw an interview with Belicheck recently and he said he liked to do contracts straight up with what the market says, no bs added. He specifically mentioned the 49ers and adding those void years etc and how it catches up to you and you never know who gets hurt or what can happen. Essentially becuase he hated dead cap money and the way we do deals will lead to that.

Yah that's all fine and dandy when he had Tom Brady in his prime as his QB.

Eh it's just philosophy - niners used upfront cash to make the cap work and if the player worked out, it was great. The problem is if the player didn't work out. A lot of this dead cap is money we've already paid out in signing bonuses but spread out over several years.

it's just finally being accounted for. It sucks though. Doing what BB did only really works if you have a bonafide star qb who can carry a lot of the team. If you don't have that, that philosophy usually doesn't work.

Lol exactly, I just posted about that. It's easy to look brilliant when you have Brady for almost 2 decades. BB is a great coach but wasn't a great GM. 90%+ of his draft selections his finals 12 years were awful.

doing what we did wasn't a bad move in theory, just over did it while we shot for a SB and players/injuries caught up.

I don't know if you want to follow Belicheck's model unless you have a Tom Brady under center. He built some god awful rosters and it caught up to him the moment Brady left. But year i don't remember the Pats ever signing free agents to big contracts like some on here think we should be doing.
