Another week of Mac earning his contract and then some. Making Purdy look like a rip off at this point. Tough to see even a prime Purdy out doing what we see from Mac.

Personally, I get the feeling this coach and front office often pay people for PAST performance, versus future reality. They seem to feel obligated to show their loyalty to awarding the prior performance. When a more ruthless approach would be the Walsh approach (although he didn't have to deal with salary cap issues) that let's people go when they are near the point their productivity starts to decline.
They also don't draft star replacements well -- if you have a star they is key to your offense/defense - in lieu of filling other less important holes, it can make sense to draft their star replacement early -- Trent Williams for example, Kittle for example, etc. So then they become hostage to these critical parts.
Deebo - top case in point
CMC - gave him a raise based on the prior year performance, and immediately his production tanked with injuries - yeah, when you use the heck out of a running back they are going to suffer from wear. That is the sober reality, 9ers ignored it.
Trent - he's still a top performer, but the decline is there. Again, rewarded with future dollars for past performance.
Kittle - Love him, but he's getting older, but his contract tweak wasn't really damaging overall.
Juice - why haven't they drafter or even "undrafted FA" his replacement?? They re-upped him this year even tho his performance declines every year.
The Chiefs are in a down year, but they seem to be able to churn their roster much better than the 9ers and yet always have a worse draft position.
I am with you on this for the most part.
Well I am not. This business of paying for past performance not future reality is nonsense. There is no such thing as future reality, it is future speculation. The team pays people to stop them from upping and going elsewhere. How would the zone react if every time a player reaches his peak, another team poaches them?
The argument that every time you pay a guy good money he immediately goes down injured is pure BS.Not even worth discussing.
Bill Walsh was in the favourable position of being able to stockpile players, Steve Young being the obvious example. Didn't always work. Replacing Roger Craig as an example. But comparing him with guys working under the salary cap is simply not valid.
The drafting point is flawed. So we should have drafted Trent's replacement years ago? It isn't that simple. O linemen of quality are increasing difficult to find in the draft. And had we picked one up a few years ago, he would now be coming up for his second contract. So, with Trent still playing very well you either lose him or you lose his replacement. It's the salary cap.
Drafting star replacements? It's sheer luck for any team. You mention Kittle but he was drafted in the 5th! So you don't just pick up his replacement. You try various options and you find that the likes of Kittle doesn't just fall into your hands. And certainly not (previous paragraph refers) when you actually want him.

Refreshing to see a QB with an NFL arm on the niners again. He's no Allen/Stafford, but he might as well be compared to Brock.
Hope Mac continues to earn his contract and then some!
