For sure. they need to get out of Ferrel's contract ASAP and roll with Tonges as the primary back up

Tonges is playing really well. He does his best at blocking but is not a bulldozer there. What's really impressive is he runs good routes and catches everything you throw at him. Hands are in the outstanding category. He goes and gets the ball too and won't wait for it. Like the game winner in the endzone. There is a lot to like there. He's just not fast. That's the drawback. But he has a lot of the other things.

Mac Jones has really elevated and resurrected a few careers while he has been the QB. Bourne and Tonges have been phenomenal as pass catchers. I hope that Shanahan has already envisioned the possibilities of having two receiving TEs on the field at the same time when Kittle comes back. The pure hell the defense will be in having being trapped in a predictable defensive scheme because of the unknown will keep DCs up at night.

I like Tonges enough to have more 2 TE set when Kittle comes back. Do it Shanny.

Agree and IMO, it'd be very effective.

Time for Kyle to deploy double TE when Kittle comes back. This might improve run game in zone.

Tonges isn't a very good run blocker though.

Missing Kittle's blocking is similar to missing Bosa's pass pressure. Not easy to replace. We also don't have Deebo anymore and Aiyuk isn't playing. Both are considered very good blockers which is a part of Kyle's zone running scheme. They often were part of the reason short runs became 10-15 yards or more. Without them blocking on the edges the defenses can pinch the running in toward the middle.
