I don't see us doing that. He's been putting in the work and Shanny will give him another year at least.

It's a silly idea. Every time Cowing got time as a WR he was making plays...just didn't get many opportunities since Kyle needs his WRs to have the offense down pat.

I agree. Shanahan is notoriously tough on his WRs, but he gets plenty out of them. Aiyuk was seen as a bust after year one, Jennings spent a year on the PS, etc. Cowing "should" be poised for a step forward this year.

The OL will not be as fluid as some may think. We will start with TW, Bartch, Brendel, Puni, and McKivitz. Swing tackle will be Humphries job to lose. Nugent and Zakelj will battle it out for backup IOL.

We have not had a legit Slot DB since K'waun Williams, and Stout is a carbon-copy of Williams. His job to lose. Camp battles for Safety PT will be interesting. Sigle will have a chance for PT because of MM injury. His resume sounds encouraging.

Lots of fuel for discussion...

1. I agree on Cowing. I forgot Robinson is suspended. Big opportunities for the young guys.

2. I agree that those will be the starters, barring injury. I was thinking more that the bench situation could be fluid. Guys like Hennessey and Nugent will have their opportunities and more vets might be added.

3. Stout's style of play is really exciting. He could easily have more sacks than picks by the end of the year. And Sigle does sound intriguing. Safety minutes is probably the most up-in-the-air position group. I would love for one of these young guys to reach up and grab it. Tig Brown has not done that yet.

Yes...makes total sense, right before the kid shows us what he can do once he mastered the offense. Great use of a 4th round pick to trade them away for 6th rounders 2 years later.

Exactly. He showed flashes of legit talent last year and now in year 2. I think he's going to be a very useful piece for us this year

OL: I think Matt Hennessy will take Zakelj spot

DL: Kalia Davis hasnt shown anything and i agree Elliot hasn't either. Everyone has written off Drake Jackson but if he gets healthy he's DE4

LB: not sure if we keep 6 but if we do it will be ST ace Luke Gifford. He came over with the ST coach i think. He's probably a lock

CB: Lots of battles here but i think Tomlinson beats out Lucas. Thats just my opinion though.

S: I think Odum is gone.

RB - I am not familiar enough with Abanikanda to say, but if he performs that would be awesome.

WR - I had forgotten about Robinson's suspension. Gage would seem to have the edge in that battle, but I wonder if Kyle would prefer a young WR so he can mold them to his image.

DL - I feel like Davis has shown more than Elliott, but maybe I am making excuses for his injuries. I have definitely written Drake off. I hope he proves me wrong because he has upper tier talent, but I just didn't see anything from him even when he was on the field.

LB - I agree 6 might be too much, especially given the uncertainty at safety and the inexperience at CB. Warner, Winters, Martin, and Bethune are locks for me. Graham and Robinson both have potential, but I forgot that it was the ST coach who wanted Gifford. You are probably right.

CB - I just figured Stout made Tomlinson redundant, but it will be a good battle. Both excel on ST, so may the best man win! (Siran Neal will also be in the mix!)

S - If the team keeps Gifford, Lucas/Tomlinson, and all the young safeties, Odum's status as ST ace will be unnecessary, so you might be right. The reason I saw him staying was that he might be the most physical safety in Mustapha's absence. But Saleh might like playing Bethune as a SS/LB hybrid if he feels he needs more thump. If they let Odum go and keep Pinnock, Tig Brown, Sigle, and Richie Grant, it might be wise to pick up a more physical in the box guy.
I'm skeptical they would keep guys over Odum and Patrick Taylor. He values these 3 things, like ALOT.
1. Special Teams play
2. Blocking
3. Versatility

This means that every year he angers us all by keeping subpar veteran players over intriguing young prospects.

Its going to be even more so this year. Look for them to put an emphasis on special teams. These younger guys on the fringe of the roster better be willing to play ST at a high level or they will be booted.

In my haste, I didn't mention Hennessy. He may be the first in line to take over at Center if Brendel struggles or is injured.

Several pre-draft signing screamed Special Teams. Also, the speed selected in the draft will help STs as well.
I thought Curtis Robinson looked like he was making progress before the injury, I think he is a dark horse to contribute

If you didn't see flashes then you weren't looking lol.

He was literally making big plays almost every time he touched the ball as a WR.

4 catches 80 yards
1 rush 7 yards

That's all flash lol.

He stood out in preseason too, easily the guy who made the most plays out there

One thing to remember is when the 53 man roster is announced is the vets who are kind of later in their career and aren't a hot commodity if they are released tend to be cut more often than not these days. Partly because you can pretty much get handshake deals that they're going to join your PS and also so you can do some roster fudging.

You release guys under their rookie deals and they can be picked up. You release a tenured vet and he can simply stick around.

yes but you're still on the roster if youre not suspended I believe ? I dont think Niners are cutting him, because they were well aware of the suspension when they signed him

back to the OP

1. Carrying 5 safeties and Mustapha on PUP/IR is pretty extreme. I cant remember the last time Niners did that. Last year they carried 3 safeties on the initial 53 IIRC. I dont see them carrying five. I think Pinnock or Grant or Odum will be cut. And they like Odum too much for my liking, so Id bet money on Grant or Pinnock being cut.

2. I think someone else aside from Lucas makes the fifth corner spot. They need a second outside corner on the team imo. Brown, Green and Demo can all play outside, but the rest of the guys I dont think they can. Stout is going to start off as a pure slot/nickel imo. Lucas is a special teamer nickel/slot guy.

3. I dont see them carrying Pleasants on active roster. hes a PS guy

The rest is reasonable. I do think they cut Willis and get him on PS again.

Cowing got penalised on numerous occasions last year even though he got limited reps. If he doesn't clean that up he'll be in big trouble trying to make the roster.

He has shown flashes so he could really take a leap forward in year 2 but equally he could be cut if he doesn't step up given they just drafted a receiver and a returners (in addition to the competition from other vets on the bubble).
My post draft 53, + injured lists & practice squad.

QB: Purdy, Jones, Mordecai
RB: CMC, Guerendo, James, Abinikanda
FB: Juice
WR: Jauan, Pearsall, Cowing, Watkins
TE: Kittle, Farrell, Dwelley
OL: TW, Bartch, Brendel, Puni, McKivitz, Hennessy, Burford, Zakelj, & Humphries
DE: Bosa, Williams, Gross-Matos, Okyuaninou, & Beal
IDL: Collins, West, Givens, Anderson, & K.Davis
LB: Warner, Winters, Martin, Gifford, Robinson & Bethune
CB: DMo, Green, Stout, T.Brown, Neal, Luter
S: Brown, Grant, Pinnock, Sigle
ST: Moody, Wishnowsky, & Weeks

NFI: QB Rourke
PUP: WR Aiyuk
PUP: S Mustapha
SUSPENDED: WR Robinson (3 games)

PS:

RB Kiner
RB Taylor*
WR Taylor*
WR Bergen
WR Hodgins*
WR Gage*
TE Tonges or TE Willis
C Nugent
G Moss
G Colby
T Alacron**
T Gutierrez
DE Garvin*
DT Valdez
LB Graham
LB Blanton
CB Robinson

This is very very early, went with just 4 WRs as I don't see them keeping one of the 3 vets, this guaranteeing his salary for 2025, so just have all 3 signed to the PS, then activate one or two for a few weeks as the 2 PS players allowed to be elevated, I figure Robinson gets suspended for 3 games, Aiyuk & Mustapha on PUP, and Rourke on NFI.

I also don't know if they cut Odum or not, they GTD $1M on April 1st, so he probably has a leg up on Grant, since Grant doesn't have much GTD in his 1yr deal.
