I hope Bergen does make the 53-man roster as the team primary return specialist.

Is there anyone on the 53 behind Bergen that looks like they could take that spot? Neyor is a monster athlete but he needs to learn how to play the position for a year. The rest of them are kind of journeymen and non-noteworthy guys.

Not sure, only one who I think is Jacob Cowing, well there's the new WR Malik Knowles can return kicks & punts, other than that, just Bergen & Cowing, that's I'm aware of.

I'm glad he and Cowing are getting buzz. We need all our young guys to step up but I don't think it has to come at the expense of Pearsall.

Ricky is still the more proven guy in the NFL from all our year 2/rookies at WR. Though I don't know if Ricky would ever be an X out there. Don't know if Cowing or Watkins are either but there is room for all 3 to be great. Especially with JJ going into the last year of his deal and Aiyuk looking to push his way out at some point.

If we can get Jacob Cowing, & Jordan Watkins going, with a healthy Jauan Jennings & Ricky Pearsall, the 49ers receiving/passing could be awesome, on top of also have a healthy CMC, & Kittle, the 49ers offense could be a huge threat to opposing defenses, just need TW to stay healthy, Puni keeps playing like he has, McKivitz keeps improving, hopefully Ben Bartch or Connor Colby wins the LG spot, leaving Jake Brendel the only OL to worry about, also with Juice back, the run game should be back to dominance, Guerendo & James should be the teams' 2nd & 3rd RBs.

Idk about anyone else, but I'm super excited for the 2025 season, can't wait for late July, & August to see the ypiung guys like Watkins, Cowing, James, Guerendo, and of course our defensive picks, if Williams, Collins, & West start like they should plus Martin, & Stout carving out roles, with a healthy Bosa, DMo, & Huff, this team could be a surprise team, I think ST is even upgraded, Morstead, Weeks, Gifford, Surratt, Pinnock are all solid ST pickups.

When the pads go on the OL depth and Guerendo are going to be where I'm looking most. I think the starting line is essentially set in stone with Trent, Ben, Jake, Dom, Colt. Behind them there are actually some interesting guys, enough I'm not "worried".

I'm not worried worried about the backup OL, I like Hennessy, Burford, and Colby, depends on who is the swing Tackle, right now I'm leaning Andre Dillard, he got $315K of his base salary fully GTD, doesn't mean he's a lock, as Petit-Frere was also given $315K GTD and they waived him so the swing T spot could be Burford for all we know.

I'll be looking closely at the younger players this offseason, & hope they look as good as they do in practice when they're playing.

There are 12 WRs on the 90 man roster.
2 of them are going to miss the start of the season in Aiyuk and Robinson.
5 of them are Jennings, Pearsall, Watkins, Cowing, and Bergen.
There are also:
Gage - 7 years, from Ravens
Owens - 1 year on 49ers PS
Hodgins - 4 years, from Giants
Knowles - 2 years, from Vikings
Neyor - Raw, REALLY raw.

Owens and Neyor are at least a little interesting.

Pleasants seems like he may be the swing tackle based on what has happened so far.
Excited to see what Watkins can do when the pads come on

I remember 1984 when the 49ers were the first team to make him uncomfortable in the Super Bowl.

To be fair he did move a lot but it was usually just a step or two before he threw the ball.
I remember that too. And I remember thinking, after Pittsburgh threw up 28 points against Miami (AFC Champ. game), that SF would kill the Dolphins in the Super Bowl.

I look at the RBs on the roster and that tells me where the offense is going next year, we are really 4-5 deep there
I wonder if Hankerson is up to the task of turning Pearsall, Watkins, Cowing, Bergen, Owens, and Neyor into NFL players, and FAST.

I'd say 3 deep.

CMC
Guerendo
James
Juice

They are pretty much the only locks.

Kiner seems like a PS guy.
Taylor has to beat out all of the ST specialists to make the team since that's where his value is.
Abanikanda <spelled from memory, how did I do?> DREAMS of making a PS.

The 49ers have only kept less than 4 rbs twice since 2017 in the Shanahan/Lynch era. Mind you that's while Deebo was here taking snaps at RB quite frequently as well. Now coming off last year where the position group was ravaged by injuries yet again and Deebo is gone, if be shocked if the opening day roster didn't have 4 rbs on the 53.

Yeah they are definetely keeping 5 because Juice is not a RB but he counts as a RB when filling out your 53. Taylor I think is close to a lock because he is great on special teams.

So, if Taylor is deemed dispensable because of the other ST specialists on the roster this year ... think your 4th RB is Kiner? Or are you looking at the waiver wire?

I don't think it's definite. They brought in a bunch of great ST players, so it's going to be who is the better ST player or if that is equal then who is the better position player. I remember how much the 49ers loved Gary Plummer because he was a ST ace who started on defense. Freed up a roster spot elsewhere. Like Odum may stick on the roster because he can play safety as well as being good on ST. Gifford, Neal, and Grant are all ST aces and are all trying for those limited spots too.

I think, unless Kiner or Abanikanda blow them away, they might just rely on 3 RBs (and Juice) on the 53 and put the better of those 2 RBs on the PS.

In the last week Chubb, Akers, and Dobbins all signed single year deals with teams. At least the 49ers are not desperate :)

I think they will find the 4th on the roster and probably two for the PS somewhere. Also to follow up, the WRs on the team we all know must be a big part of the running game so they fill run snaps as well
We're all guilty of going off track in threads(myself included) but talking about RB depth in a Jordan Watkins thread seems way off track lol.

Let's try to take it to the RB threads at least and keep this for Jordan Watkins discussion.

Hehe ... seems to happen all the time :)

Funny thing is, the RB depth discussion is essentially the WR depth discussion in that the bottom of the depth chart is a total mystery for both position groups.

Can you move all the RB discussion to a RB position thread?

I'll have to check...still a rookie mod just trying not to blow this whole site up lol.

I think I can only move whole threads and not specific posts but worth asking about.

Anyways...go Jordan Watkins! Would like to see him join the boys during the 40 days away to get more throwing sessions in with Brock.
