Right. Neither side is budging, so it's up to JJ to come back and play out the final year of the 2-year contract he signed before last season.
The 49ers don't intend to bring JJ back for the future.
I think he will have another big year. He will get his money. Either here or in free agency. It looked like a deal was going to get done. But now it's reported as not. Anyway he's still under contract. With 2 big years including last year and this year Jennings will get his money somewhere. We need him this year here. Because everyone else is injured and some are even gone.
I don't think he will come close to last year again. This year CMC, Pearsall, Robinson, Guerendo, and Aiyuk are going to be taking targets from him hopefully a lot more than last year.
Aiyuk is unknown coming off the injury. He could be mid season and even then not full strength and speed. CMC is always injured. So is Guerendo a lot too. Pearsall is largely unknown and had a few pretty good games at the end of the year. We just don't know on him. Jennings is the most reliable, healthy, consistently productive guy.
I am with you on all of the things you said about Jennings ... bit funny saying he's healthy when he hasn't practiced in a while :)
That said Pearsall and Guerendo are no longer rookies and should do a lot more than last year ... assuming they will do less is odd at least. CMC should hopefully be at least more healthy that last year even if he doesn't get 2023 CMC level. Robinson, after missing with his suspension should be good for targets every game ... I don't think he's ever had a significant injury. Aiyuk is obviously an open question, but we can assume he'll get a bunch of chances to show he can play. I don't feel like it's a stretch at all to say all of those players will match or exceed last year's targets. Deebo and Mason are gone with their 95 targets, and Robinson and James are in ... but while those two probably won't total 95 targets it wouldn't surprise me at all if they got 50+ combined. Then add in that Watkins and Cowing will almost certainly get 20 between them. I just don't see there being enough chances for Jennings to get close to 113 targets again.
All that is part of why Jennings wanted a new deal NOW, not after this year.
