But it's not the style of player he is. He has to be a huge guy who occupies people. While Warner, Winters, Martin, Sigle fly in and make the plays. He may still be able to do that. You have to wait and see. You have to evaluate him on what he does. He's not a stat sheet guy and never will be.

thats how i saw the draft pick too.

Our run D was god awful last year because we had no one who can do this. He will be there to eat blocks and allow people in 2nd and 3rd level to make plays

Yeah that's really his job. So people have to evaluate him that way. Which they won't. LOL. But looked at a different way he's maybe not that bad for us. CJ West will make more splash plays when he gets healthy. Because he's explosive and fast. This guy is a huge dude who eats up blockers. That can help you in a way. Just won't always show up as much to the average fan.

You shouldn't have to invest a top 50 pick on a DT who's only a 2 down guy. That's what folks have an issue with…especially in a draft that that chalk full of DTs.

imo we don't have a legit pass rushing DT.

you want a big fat dude to take on blocks, go draft someone on day 3 or sign someone cheap.

I was with you until the last 3 words. No reason to assume he can't grow into a different role. Ideally he's a space eater who can disengage and chase laterally or up field. We want him to be an every down player. But to start he has to be a 2 down player who controls the line.

Legit pass rushing DT are rare and go in first round or are too small and are a liability against the run. The #1 issue with our defense last year is we could not stop the run we put a heavy emphisis on it this draft and rightfully so.
Not going to worry about Collins yet. I preferred Darius Alexander over him at DT(tho I wanted Will Johnson at our pick most of all…hope to be wrong there)

I think people need to understand what he is, which is delayed in his development. He is behind as a rookie and unless you're a truly special case it's hard to bloom instantly.

His potential is high but it will require a lot of work for him to get there which means we may never see it but right now is certainly not the time to make that call.

I'm not about to watch film of every teams preseason but looking at PFF who certainly weren't very favorable to West or Collins…also don't have Alexander or even a guy like Mason Graham who we all wanted graded favorably.

Kind of feels like a lot of these big body DTs for the most part need some time and Collins is already behind where he should be.

Derrick Brown looked like a pretty poor pick for Carolina first year or so but he really put it together

Unfortunately for us we need the young guys to get there quicker but Collins may simply start as a big body on run downs. We'll see if he can make that jump into legit overall DT.

Not yet but Mykel is trending that way based off what the beat writers are saying when he is lined up inside on 3rd downs.

Yup yup ... been saying this. And while this draft was deep in DTs I don't think the 1st round DTs were worth where they were picked either. One of those cases where people start taking players early just so they can be sure they get one.

Disagree that you can't find a decent DT with pass rush ability in the 2nd rd.

again you can find a good run defender who's job is a 2 down guy to stop the run outside of the top 50, we literally found that guy in west multiple rds later.

They should have just kept M Collins if they didn't want to draft a DT that could rush from the interior.

He's a sub package interior rusher, he's not a guy that's gonna rush from the interior on a regular basis. We literally don't have a DT that can do that currently

CJ West can interior pass rush and will. He's explosive and fast. When healthy.
Collins is slow and runs out of gas very quickly but his main issue is that he has a high-pad level and I just don't remember a defensive lineman that was able to change his posture to a low-pad level with success.

I imagine that all the coaches since high school have been trying to change his posture but still he has a high-pad level

Again, they view him and his ceiling differently than you

They don't need Aaron Donald. Just the ability to put the Guard in the QBs space without giving up a freeway sized gap. Then they also needed another one.

But if you can (from rookie year on) name a dominant pass rushing DT that is not a run liability i am all ears.
This was a horrible pick. You don't draft this type of player with a high second round pick.
