This was a horrible pick. You don't draft this type of player with a high second round pick.

Then who? do you pass
on a player you see as an AP candidate in 2-3 years because of the late 3rd early 4th round pick value of picking a bit too soon?
Only to miss out because another team valued him a little more.

For many draft picks you have to find the player with the abilities you need and hopefully the growth to gain the rest.

They needed Fred Warner clean, but not to fill the interior with no upside run stuffers. So they "paid" the premium to get the ones they thought had the most.

I never said anything about his pass rushing performance. Strictly talking about his ability to take on blocks, hold his ground consistently and not get blown up. Hope he picks it up soon, but getting Kinlaw vibes. Looks like Tarzan plays like Jane.
Not a good sign if he can't keep his pads low and maintain leverage this late in his career. That's high school coaching. Also, you can't teach motor!
Kinlaw flashbacks.
Well, he talked the talk, now, he's gotta walk the walk. Shoulda had his a$$ in here for OTA's. Now, he looks like a$$
I remember BY getting obliterated in pre-season.... I especially remember him getting pancaked multiple times in his welcome to the NFL moments.

The number of IDL players who don't have a bunch of lost matchups in pre-season on their rookie year is approaching zero. It may have happened, but it's incredibly rare at best. It takes time to adjust to a game where every player you are going against is one of the biggest, strongest, and fastest people you've ever played against.

It's a shame Collins' agent held him out and that whole 2nd round fiasco, but at least they were the first to break the stalemate.

As young and raw as this team is I wonder if they will continue to have semi-regular practices further into the season just to help the kids refine their games more. The CBA makes it not like it used to be where rookies might be at the facility 70 hours a week until they were up to speed, and it may be that 2 practice sessions on the field may not be enough for these kids to get good enough fast enough.

Not yet but Mykel is trending that way based off what the beat writers are saying when he is lined up inside on 3rd downs.

He's a sub package interior rusher, he's not a guy that's gonna rush from the interior on a regular basis. We literally don't have a DT that can do that currently

CJ West can interior pass rush and will. He's explosive and fast. When healthy.

west hopefully can get there…in college he was a run defender more than a one gap penetrator. It's a projection. Again we don't have a proven pass rushing DT.

I got no problem with that. His pass rushing ability is a projection though. That's why I'm saying they should have kept M Collins, brought in a vet or drafted someone that can actually rush the passer now, while he develops

They don't need Aaron Donald. Just the ability to put the Guard in the QBs space without giving up a freeway sized gap. Then they also needed another one.

But if you can (from rookie year on) name a dominant pass rushing DT that is not a run liability i am all ears.

No reason to go to extremes, no one is talking about Donald or needing a "dominant" rookie DT from day 1. They have no proven interior pass rushers right now. They didn't draft any DTs that showed they were interior rushers…those are projections. I'm fine with that IF you have other players in place to hold the fort down.

we're dependent on rookies who haven't done it at a lesser level and who else? Imo it's an issue not many are talking about, we just assume they drafted a couple IDL so we're good there

So far it's looking pretty damn bad. Drafted a guy that's just "big" at #43. He was one of the best run defenders in college but that was because he was "big" 2nd string NFL players are blowing him up. Dudes about to be 24 years old too. Not calling him a bust but it seems this pick was out of need and he is not filling that hole both figuratively nor literally any time soon

I think that's what West is for.
There was one run play I saw where he got pushed back almost 10 yards. Wouldn't expect that with how big he is.
Could it be just a question of technique? Leverage?
(I'm obviously not an expert)

It was an extreme, but my point, wasthere any pass rushing IDL that was not a run defense liability?
They chose to go the other way and get run guys who they hope can develop and a DE who can maybe develop into a dominant inside rusher.

Stop getting to 3rd and <3's.

West was basically the same thing, a 2 down DT who was elite vs the run in college.

IMO I think he will transition quicker because he's got the leverage and explosiveness that Collins doesn't really have right now.
This dude sucking is what's concerning to me about preseason so far. Everyone during both games acted like the sky is falling because Mac Jones throws interceptions or our 3rd string defense allows some drives, I don't care. But Collins is what's worrying me. Our other rookies have actually shown flashes. He hasn't and he was supposed to be a big one.
