I don't see DPOY. Not because he won't be good, but because you need a lot of flash to win those types of awards. Brock Bowers got 1st team All Pro because he had a high volume of catches, but wasn't anywhere near as efficient as Kittle. If Williams did win DPOY it's because our Dline is destroying pockets and Williams is eating a lot- similar to AA's 10 sack year in 2019.

Agree - I think he is going to be a great player but as you said its not the flash/splash.
Setting the edge isn't sexy but it wins games.

I think there is a very real chance that Mykel crushes his sack production from college even as a rookie. Partly because he may be seeing a lot more 1 on 1s with Bosa on the other side and the big bodies we added in the middle.

I also think our scheme will allow him to shine more with the splash plays.

Now you guys may be right and guys like Pearce, Walker or Abdul Carter may get more pass rush looks or given their ability to rush with speed maybe they get more of those sexy stats but at the same time it also wouldn't shock me to see a quick glow up from Williams in our scheme.

But I'm just waiting to hear how he looks in camp first. I recall Aldon getting high praise from Joe and the other guys quickly. Likewise we saw the bust coming a mile away with AJ Jenkins in those early camp reviews.

It's not always the case but you can feel which direction the player is swinging early on. I believe Mykel will bring the good stuff.

I think we have to factor in his age as well. Could take him a few years to adapt to the nfl.

Never know but the way he was tossing guys at the SEC I don't think his age would hold him back. NFL is obviously another beast all together but I think it's more about getting the scheme down and improving his rush plan and technique.

Jared Verse had 4.5 sacks last yr and won

Plays LB. I can't see them giving a DE with 4.5 sacks DROY. That also was a down year conpared to the norm when guys would get 7 to 11 out the gate as a rookie.
He's everything from Defensive Rookie of the year to total bust in the predictions. That's what you get with a boom or bust prospect. He has the traits. Tall, long, powerful, sets the edge, pretty athletic. Can definitely stop the run. Plays multiple positions all over. I just don't think his pass rush is very natural. He has some work to do in that category.

Personally I'm coming around to this pick and hope for the best. He has a lot of great traits. I hope they can coach him up and he can learn some pass rush moves. He certainly has all the traits you can't teach. Like height and length and power. I'm starting to like this pick. I hope his pass rush moves get better. Maybe they will.

Verse is a DE. Same thing as Aldon Smith back in his day…nobody considered him as a linebacker. He was basically an edge player.

It simply wasn't a big sexy number rookie year and he wasn't getting the big sack numbers but impacting plays like crazy with his strength.

Mykel certainly has a chance to show something similar.

I think he can have a major impact. I'll just be surprised if he hits the norm in terms of the typical higher rookie sack numbers. If he does, it's great for us. I think we can make the playoffs, but if Williams is coming out of the gate like this, we can make a run.

Mykel is not a boom or bust prospect. He's a high floor guy who at a minimum will be a strong DE run defender. If the pass rushing develops like he has the talent for….he can be a star.

Verse is not a LB. He was a DE for the Rams. (98% of his snaps were on the DL).

Thanks for reminding me about AJ Jenkins. That was unnecessary

Nice read. Very informative article about us falling in love with Mykel. I'm excited to see how this 20 year old kid develops this season. I think he's going to surprise a lot of people as a pass rusher and we already know what he brings as a run defender. DROY is possible.
