The reason why their defense was getting better towards the end of the season is because a lot of the younger guys like Battle were finally playing. The only reason they were playing is because the over the hill vets that Anarumo favored got injured and he had no choice but to throw the younger guys in there.

That's the single biggest criticism I've seen of him, that he'll stick with subpar veterans to a fault over unproven but higher talent younger players.

Are we talking about Lou Anarumo or Kyle Shanahan? Doesn't seem like it bothered a lot of you guys that Kyle keeps doing this. All of a sudden with Lou it's a thing.

ya know..... you have a point lol

Its an annoying trait of most coaches.

Does he though? Look at all the young players and rookies that regularly start on this team. Meanwhile Anarumo stuck with the corpses of Sam Hubbard and Geno Stone until they were both knocked out with injuries. Its like Fangio's aversion to younger players taken to an extreme.

On the other hand you look at someone like Saleh and young players have continually developed and progressed under him, especially linebackers. It happened with the 49ers and continued with the Jets. Quincy Williams went from being cut by the Jaguars of all teams to developing into one of the better LB's in football with the Jets.

Yes def a point, but not to the degree of Lou. Over the years he has stuck with vets and let rookies rot. This year he had no choice due to injuries and we sucked because many were bad and never developed from the previous years. Thankfully last years class is very very good imo.
Whoever they hire I hope he has the ability to adjust the scheme to attack whatever offense they're facing. I hope he can get the players pumped up when needed. I hope he can get along with Kyle and isn't just here for an interview as a HC. I'm okay with anyone that can do thise 3 things.

When you use 3 1st rounders on Trey Lance and repeatedly blow picks on guys like Latu and Trey Sermon, that will hit your depth. This year they were paying the penance for that. Hopefully future drafts look more like 2024 than the previous few years.

Yes, we generally agree. I may be a bit more critical of Kyle, but I call it like I see it.

I think this is more prevalent on offense btw. O line and WR. I feel like Jennings should have been playing more sooner. I Wonder about Cowning... he has flashed imo, but didn't get a ton of opportunities. Is that going to improve with BA back next year? Hard to think it will. That being said he seemed to be willing, or injuries force him, to throw the young guys out there this year and we have a damn good idea whos who etc.

If they can nail this draft (preferably in the trenches!) We will bounce back very fast.

Saleh is the only one you really need to wait for I believe because of his HC interviews. Allen and Lou were fired so they should be available to interview Allen and Lou immediately. Jeff Ulbrich is under contract with the New York Jets as interim head coach. If he doesn't get the Jet's head coaching job, he may be released from contract.

I just don't get the sense that Saleh is coming back to SF, there's just so many opportunities to stay on the east coast as a DC.

My picks are simple:

Allen and Ulbrich, if they can't get Allen then get Ulbrich.

I agree not only that I don't think he wants to go back down to a defensive coordinator. I even think he would take a coaching position in college before taking a step down.

I loved Saleh when he was here, but I'm sick of the coaching carousel at DC. If Saleh came back, did great with the defense next year, then he'd probably be gone the following year.

We need some continuity.

Sounds like Allen is your guy then.

Who was the back (3rd round?) that we had the same year as Mason, but refused or had a clause that had no ST play ?

Mason, Mostert, Wilson were all key ST players before getting chances to start at RB.

I'm sick of the rotating DC's as well. So Allen would be the better choice for the long run. However, if it's just 1 year, with our last place schedule and elite players (returning from injury), I wouldn't mind going for it all this year. SB at Levi's. SF wins vs. Buffalo book it!
