🏆 SUPER BOWL LVIII PREGAME THREAD - SF 49ERS vs KC CHIEFS 🏆

I can't blame anyone who picks against us.

Objectively, we have not been great since the Baltimore game. We are going against the best QB in the league. He has played very well in the postseason. He doesn't turn it over often. There is the Reid vs Wilkes factor. On paper, a mismatch.

I think these picks are 50/50 if we played to our full capabilities against GB/Detroit.

Now, if we do play to our full capabilities on Sunday, we will win. I just don't think we can go 60 minutes without a turnover or headscratching coaching choices.

My gut says this game goes down to the wire or KC wins by 10 or more. I don't see a scenario where we blow them out. There's just too many ways they can win. And too many ways we can lose.

I am not confident at all.

Why are there too many ways they can win?? I mean we have the better offense and can put up points. Imo we can win both a low scoring game (if our D plays to their potential) and a high scoring game as we have the better offense. KC is a low scoring team. If the niners score points KC will have a difficult time keeping up, especially with SF run game. Everyone talks about SF poor run D but fail to talk about the chiefs run D???

Hey BigT, unrelated to your post. Which CB is the nickel CB? I don't mean the CB in the slot, but the one that comes onto the field when there's two LBs on the field? I'm guessing it's Jaylen Watson but wanted to confirm. Also, which of the three starting LBs gets taken off the field in nickel?

Usually Watson

As far as linebacker sometimes Chenal sometimes Tranquil. It depends. I have seen Gay come off and Bolton and Tranquil stay.

Yeah I figured it'd be Watson since Sneed/McDuffie are really good. Interesting about the nickel LBs. I thought there would be two clear top2 LBs. Thanks.

I know the Niners came from behind twice in the playoffs. I said that in my post. I'm not confident that they can do it again against a Chiefs defense that is playing really well. They shut down the Dolphins, Bills and Ravens in the playoffs. All those teams have really good offenses. They held them to a total of 41 points in those 3 games. That's why I'm not as confident that the Niners can afford to fall behind. The playoffs are always about who's playing the best at the time. Not what they did during the season. If you're honest you have to admit that their D is playing better than the Niners D. That's my biggest concern.

Yes they are and yes they did. However let's not forget the Dolphins were banged up at the end of the season and definitely trending the wrong way including on offense. That game was in extreme cold and not a great fit for the speed based passing offense the Dolphins have.

Bills weren't struggling to score that much in their game despite another cold weather game.

The Ravens game was really their crowning achievement in the playoffs but honestly that felt more of a Ravens issue with their reluctance to run the ball.

Biggest thing for us is making sure we don't turn the ball over. Their defense will bring pressure, it's up to our guys to get open and Brock to make the right decisions when the pressure is there. He's done a great job of it this season but this defense is definitely talented and we'll need to avoid any mental errors to beat them.

Reading NY's analysis makes me think it's going to be 55-10 49ers.

Let's just say 56-10 bc fat bee sting face (not Mullens) will NOT miss an extra point like our kicker did in '89

That was leg fatigue, too many PAT tries

Lol. Had some stripper call me a b***h and take my expensive ass tequila shot I had poured when I wouldn't cheat on my wife during a business trip. Had a buddy get strategically separated from us so they could prey on him (he was the weak link) but eventually they tossed him out of the back when he ran out of money. That place is crazy.

I agree with you on all those things. The 49ers are such a balanced offense that it truly is a 'pick your poison' situation for KC's defense. KC has the greatest intangible on the field with Mahomes. That, and Pacheco could be a problem if the 49ers aren't up to the task. But outside of that, I do see more favorable player matchups for the 49ers than KC. Reid versus Wilks scares me. The defensive talent of the 49ers has to help equalize the Reid vs Wilks mismatch.

Key to the game right here.

There are going to be downs where Reid has a good playcall versus Wilks. That is when Bosa has to whoop the right tackle and blow it all up. Or Hargrave whoops the backup LG. Or Warner shows exceptional range to break up a pass. These things need to happen multiple times.

Yeah, Reid is a smart mfer, everyone gotta be on their best game. I am hoping for fly-around Fred to show up

Again read what I said about their D in the playoffs….please use nuance and look at the games, not just the score.

Miami in minus weather, with a QB that has never played in that s**t….with injuries ALL OVER the place. Miami turtled up vs any team that was somewhat good this yr.

Bills simply made mistakes. Missed FG dropped balls. Stopped doing what was working. Allen tried to be super man when he didn't have to be. They were running the ball all over the place and giving gimme throws all game.

Baltimore ran the ball TWICE in the second half. In a one score game. The best f**king running team in the league. LJ had wide open lands to run, but instead wanted to try and be Drew Brees and throw the ball all over the place. He stopped doing what made him the MVP and that's on them, not their D. Fumbles by rookie WR. Triple coverage INT off missed PI.

People have literally not watched the games to think KC is playing amazing hot football right now. They have one of the worst run D's in the league. Guess what SF is good at?

AND then SF….packers scored off an underthown PI and Gipson slipping on a wet field, plus a random 75 kick return.

How about we give some credit to the lions? That's a damn good offense with an ELITE OL. They're better than KC. They score how many pts in the second half after the mad adjustments?

It's crazy man…all people said was SF can't play from behind blah blah blah…they do that when it mattered most and now that's an issue?

come on dude.

KC defense is definitely legit but yeah he's overselling their success. But no question they're a big test with the pressure they bring and the tight coverage they play at corner.

But our offense is pretty damn good if we're not hurting ourselves. So let's go out there and execute well and win this f*cking game!

My thesis is KC will give the single high look with an extra defender on CMC duty and they will mug our guys out wide until refs call anything. Lot of defenders up puts a challenge on Brock and our protection to get the blitz which can come from anywhere solved. There will be plays to be had, a question of if Brock can locate em quick. He can do it, just a matter of will he do it. And can't have those quick decisions where the ball goes right to a DB. They've had a couple weeks and will be sitting on our routes. The question is what will KS do faced with the run fronts, will he run into em or check to passes. Olson was on record earlier saying KS is stubborn and he wants to dictate as opposed to the D dictating. By that logic KS will ground and pound, which is what BAL didn't do. Gotta have success vs heavy fronts to avoid 3rd and L

Very true. I should've concurred

Honestly, had the Niners played the chefs in week 14, how would everyone feel about the game? They were running roughshod through the entire league, while KC was losing to the Raiders and packers. And Broncos.

IMO Pacheco isn't on the same level as Jones/Gibbs/Montgomery. I feel like the vision and balance isn't the same, but yeah defending the run overall is bit of a problem.

Agree on Reid vs Wilks. We can't be making adjustments going into the 3rd QR. they need to figure that out and pivot quickly. We got the personnel overall that can.
Recent history has shown that the Chiefs are more consistent than the 49ers, where it counts most = playoffs.

Two things have to occur for a 49ers win (even by 3 pts):
49ers defense has to step up big time (anyone who follows the 49ers knows it). The chances of that happening? maybe 40%
The Chiefs defense has to under-perform. The chances of that happening, with Spagnuolo + their experience, maybe 30%
The chances of both happening, and we really need both to happen in some fashion, is about 12%

Keeping math aside, the eye tests showed that the 49ers needed the two weeks to really improve in some key areas. Chiefs mostly have to continue what they have been doing, I don't think anyone is asking them to change, over-perform or do anything extra-ordinary. Those two scenarios by themselves tell a lot.

Ok, any given Sunday.

No doubt, I don't think they're bad or anything. If anything I feel like they've been undervalued for years. Spags is a damn good DC.

Agreed…if both teams play clean football, SF is winning by 14 imo.
