Twenty nine years ago I was in an all inclusive club in Antigua. There was not a single tv set on the property, which is fine, unless your team is in th Super Bowl. A small restaurant and bar was nearby, overlooking a small, rocky bay. so we walked over to that to watch the game. A couple of sailboats were anchored in the bay, and a British couple off of one of them walked up and joined us at our table. They knew Nothing about American football, so were asking a zillion questions. We were Niner fans, yes we thought they would win, our confidence in that was very high, and we might have the best offense in the history of the league. Statistically, we did, as we had scored 505 points that season, and at that time, that had never been done. I said I didn't think it was likely San Diego would be able to stop us from scoring on more than a couple of possessions, and while SD would score some points on our awfully good defense, I saw no way they could keep up with that. Well, six touchdown passes from Steve Young later, I was looking awfully prescient.
Eleven years later, we were sailing around Antigua in our sailboat, and I looked at that bay, and there is no way on Gods Green Earth I would Ever have the courage to sail through that rocky entrance to that bay. Maybe the British Admiralty charts were better than ours, as they owned that island for centuries, but I don't know.
I don't have any idea who's going to win the game Sunday, but I sure wish I had the courage of my convictions that I did on that day. I do not.
In 94 I think the infamous SI cover was 'the Real Super Bowl' previewing the Dallas SF NFCCG. Everyone knew the winner of that game, would win the SB. Had we not won that NFCCG, DAL would have probably won 4 straight SBs and would be viewed as the greatest NFL team of all time.
