Niners wasted no time signing Dohnovan West...read where Kiper/McShay had a 3rd rd grade on him. Between West and Poe, I think once Mack retires, we'll have a very good young C to carry on. In fact, other than Trent Williams, we could have an all-new OL. Read some raves about CB Qwantrezz Knight...NFL-N panel seemed pretty high on Castro-Fields. The guy I can't believe didn't get drafted was S O'Neal. Dude's a legit baller, strong, versatile, can cover, etc. He was one of A&M's keys to beating 'Bama.
Yeah , it was a weird from the point of view that a fair number of good players were not selected and went undrafted. This worked out for us. Undrafted free agents have a choice of where they want to go, Players like O'Neal, West, Poe etc I am sure had multiple offers from teams trying to add them to their squad. We signed O'Neal for $50k guaranteed base salary and $10k signing bonus and West for $100K and $10k bonus. UNlike a drafted player, they want to come here. They have a choice in who to sign with, That speaks to our front office, and our perception amongst college players that we are a contending team. I don't have proof, but they might have taken less money to come here. Kids want to come and play for Shanahan, and want to win. I am not sure quality UDFA will come play for Nolan or Chip Kelly. If Poe had offers from us, Jets, Texans, etc. who is he going to choose? This bodes well for us, in that we are a preferred destination not only for UFDA but also for free agents.
