Not having a formula is its strength. It tries to apply context to a QB's contribution in each individual game. That's what passer rating and its advanced stat brother, EPA/db, completely miss.

But like… if you take a notepad and write down 'good throw' or 'bad throw' to each of his throws, he had a lot more bad throws!!! So he's not very good!!!" Except… that's 100% a subjective measure that is literally all dependent on your pre-conceived opinion of Purdy. Not whether or not he's actually playing the position well.

Your issue is with perceived bias and ratings driven sports media. Why you would care what a person like Nick Wright thinks is beyond me, especially understanding that he's not paid for accuracy, he's paid for engagement.

Context free team stats are never a great way of evaluating individual players. That's why the professionals who evaluate players for a living don't use them. At best, you can get a general idea of how a player fits an offense and how that offense is operating overall.
