The bold was the case with the first pick. Instead of Aiyuk running the route, with his usual aggressive precision, it was Jennings. Instead of precision and arriving at the target point on time, he tried a little shake-and-bake on the first DB and then hesitated on his brake to the middle. The result was what looked like a bad throw by Purdy. In reality, it was the same throw he has made to BA on multiple occasions, only this time it was not BA on the route.

The immediate blame is on Jennings, who is a contested-catch guy, not known for precision routes. Secondarily it is on Shanahan to go away from a proven combination. Purdy gets the blame but is the least guilty of the three.

A good QB needs to "throw the receiver open" even if he isn't open when he releases the ball. Brock does that better than any QB we have had since Steve Young. That is what he had done many times this season, and that is what he was doing on that pick. I would bet that if someone were to chart the location of the ball on the multiple times Purdy has thrown the same pattern to Aiyuk or Deebo, we would see they all fit within a very small circle.

Purdy has made some amazing small window throws this season that may have looked like he forced it, but, as you said, he is aggressive by nature and that is what Kyle loves about him. I love it as well. Purdy is going to be just fine.

Aiyuk was getting a ton of defensive attention in the 2nd half. We're not going to force the ball in there. Just a product of missing another real weapon at WR with Deebo out.
