I would say Jimmy was playing a high enough level for 4 games this yr prior to getting injured. I already gave you his stats from those games and it was pretty on par to what Brock was doing. The team overall scored more points though

The team also ran and moved the ball better.

The problem with 2017 Jimmy was once he got hurt that creativeness that made him effective on 3rd was gone and he couldn't function from the pocket at a high enough level to offset that. Brock was much more consistent on script.

this is accurate imo, if you look at TB12, there is an ability to move within the pocket, he doesn't throw on run like Rodgers, but he can navigate and step accordingly in the pocket, he also was elite at putting the ball in the dirt at the feet of his RB he would do that all day to avoid a negative play.. this is one TB12 trait I sincerely wish was passed to JG

Brady played the position at a special level, with extremely high football IQ, for his whole career. It was the little things he did or didn't do that usually made the difference.

Not only that but he was also 6–4 230lbs with a big arm (not elite but far from a negative).

He became 230, he didn't start that way, he also didn't start with the big arm

If you listen to Mooch in the TB12 doc, that is one of the reasons the 49ers didn't draft him, at the time TB12 was drafted his arm strength was nothing special, other guys were blowing him out of the water. TB is an example of someone who worked on arm strength over the course of his career, bulked as well.

this bodes well for BP, you can gain arm strength

I am not proclaiming him anything, I just think he can play the way we have seen him play.

Kap was setting the league on fire and doing s**t that most teams have never seen at time.

im not saying Brock can't continue to do what he did. I need more than a couple games to be all in like everyone else. That's all

I would agree. Jimmy in 2017 had an EPA/play of .335 in 2017, which is absurd considering the quality of talent around him. Brock Purdy had an EPA/play of .225 this year which was 6th in the league this year. Mahomes lead the league with .304.

Lets just hope that his recovery from his elbow will increase velocity x10, Just like in the movie "Rookie of the Year"

I don't even remember him being some super creative QB running around in 2017. He moved around and could extend a little. He was never amazing at that before or after the injury imo.

I mean I got yelled at in here for saying SF avg like 15 yards per play when Lance was the QB vs Seattle (before the injury).

I think as long as you're 6'1 with a good arm, it's all good. You just need to be disciplined with your mechanics.
montana, Brees. Unitas, young, Rodgers, Favre, Aikman etc weren't super tall but tall enough. Good enough arm. Etc.

i don't put the same merit into physical size, AS LONG, as they're good enough. I do think there is an issue when you're undersized and/or weaker arm. I agree with that.

if you're in the 6'1-6'3 range with a better than average arm, I'm not worried.

Where I'll agree with you, NY, is that having that height and arm strength does provide an advantage. For example, Purdy will never have the ability to throw a great deep ball off platform like a Mahomes will. It does provide an advantage where you don't have to have great mechanics or footwork to make great throws. The speed does provide an advantage in getting away and/or scrambling.

it def provides an advantage but I don't think those are crucial items in being a great qb overall. It would be great if Purdy had it, and I'd be championing it, but he can be great without it too. That's my opinion.

Brady absolutely improved his arm strength and velocity over his career. That is a fact. It's workable, you just have to do it.

Brock increased his arm strength a ton from his senior year in college to the pros. That's a statistical fact.

now will he have the arm Trey has? I don't think so. But he still has an above average arm by every metric.
Anyone have any great stories about meeting all time great 49ers? I got to meet Joe montana once. It was awesome. My mom met him at a restaurant once with his wife back when he was still playing.

back in 2008 or 2009, when I was still in highschool, montana was privately tutoring the qb at Cardinal NewMan highschool. They played Oakdale high that season in our first three games, can't remember which. We went toe to toe with them and lost by a point or so.

anyways, our school announced that montana would be in the stands and to leave him alone. I obviously said Eff that. Hahaha I found him and sat near him. Eventually I just walked up to him and said I was a big fan and I'd like to shake his hand, I think he respected that A young kid did that, and shook my hand. Then he left because everyone tried to do the same. I was the only person he did that with and a ton of people tried to shake my hand afterward. So strange but it was an awesome experience.

I think size, athleticism, arm strength all matter a ton. When you lack there you gotta make up for it elsewhere. The margin of error is smaller.

sure you can still become a great QB. The difference is the guys coming into the league are moving more towards those size/speed/arm plus guys. Just how it's going now…from the start pop Warner thru HS and into college.

He was still 6-4 and had the frame to get bigger the right way. Arm strength can be worked on through mechanics. Brock has already done that prior to the draft. It's not like he doesn't have good mechanics and a good kinetic chain to help him throw the ball. It's already there. Sure you can build some more muscle in area to helps there…it's not gonna go from below avg go great though. You're born with that.

Lance has a tremendous effect on the run game. It's inarguable.

I don't think he has an above average arm according to NFL standards.

Per the testing that was done he's slightly above average now. His lower half was limiting him a ton.
